blown speaker?

How do I tell if a speaker is blown? Are they repairable if they are blown?

I have a mtx 7000 12" that makes this awful rattling noise when it plays. But it also still puts out a decent amount of bass(which leads me to believe something is loose internally, and it's not blown).

I have 2 of them, and only the left one rattles horribly. I've had them for around 4 years probably. This is the first time this has happened, and I haven't even played them really loud within the past month either.

Thanks

You might want to take a look inside the enclosure to make sure nothing is hitting against the sub's cone as it pays. If thats not the problem then it sounds like maybe the voice coil of that sub has partially detached from the cone. You can try contacting MTX about getting it repaired but it will probably be easier to just replace it. Fixing a damaged VC isn't something you can easily do at home.

I doubt anything could be hitting up against it, it's just a speaker and wire(just long enough to connect) inside of there.

It is possible that the voice coil could be partially detached. I'll check that out.

Might be time to upgrade to two 15's, and stick the 12 in the cubby hole.
