Best way to stop annoying power hatch rattle?
Best way to stop annoying hatch rattle?
Hi,
Since I installed my first system in my 94 Z28, I've noticed that my electronic hatch release(atleast I think thats where its coming from) rattles very badly, especially with higher bass notes.
Is there a simple way to stop this, because most of the time i can hear it over the bass.

AHHH the price of having some BUMP in the rearend!!! Lots of times you just have to live with it. there are things you can try. New seals for the hatch so that it seals tighter. Go through the backend and check to make sure that alll nuts and bolst and screwa and blah blah blah are all tight. I think I saw a post on here specifically about the latch rattling. Can't remember what they suggested. Might want to try a search for hatch latch and see what you get.
My seals are like new, especially right around the area where the latch is. I'll take the back panel off and see if i can find anything obvious in that area.

You could also try adjusting the latch. If it is too loose, that will give the hatch enough space to rattle up and down.
Also, get some of that foam tape stuff and put it everywhere two things come together
Good luck, and let us know what the problem is....

I just solved my Rattle Problem when my bass hits.
I already had done the Hatch Lock trick with some electrical tape and adjusted the hatch to lock a little tighter and adjusted my rubber stops. All that stuff help with the hatch being quieter over hard bumps but did not do squat for bass rattle.
Today, I went out to lunch and had my system bumpin and the rattling was getting to me. So I stopped the car in the parking lot rolled up the windows and turned up the radio and the Bass and went the the back seat. Before today, I could have swore it was the hatch itself that was causing this rattling but when I got in the back seat I noticed my passenger side speaker grille in the HATCH (not backseat) was not at snug as it should be at was causing ALL my rattling. When I got back to work, I took the grille in with me and took some small rubber bands and wrapped the rubberbands around each side of the 6 speaker grille tabs that snap into the panel in the rear. I went back in the car put the grille back on and turned up the radio and the Bass and the rattle went away completely...I kept turning the volume and bass up till I could not take it anymore and still no rattling...I am very happy to say the least. Mabee you should do the same thing I did, put your radio on, turn it up with the bass and go in the back seat to see if you can pinpoint the noise, you might get lucky like I did. I cant believe it took so long for me to get off my lazy butt and check for the rattle.
PS...While I was doing the rubberband trick at work, I decide to color the rubber bands with a black magic marker so now you cant even see them in the back at all.
I love it when you can find a cheap, easy and very effective fix for problems.
BTW, My system consist of a MTX Stealth Box with a 10W3 JL Audio, a Rockford amp (400 Watts) power the sub. And A Rockford Amp (50X4) powering the Polk Audio in the back seats and Power Base speakers in the Front Door Panels. All tied together with an Alpine CDA 853 1.5 Din Head Unit.
Thx,
Claude

95 Silver TA,
I will listen back there, but my rattle is a squeaky metallic rattle, so I doubt it will be that simple. I took a few interior panels off back there looking for a rattle, and after replacing them it went away for a while, so maybe thats where i should keep looking.

Thats exactly what mine sounded like when the bass hit thats why I orginally thought it was something wrong with the hatch but I was shocked to hear and see it coming from the speaker grille and that it was so freaking loud too.
Good Luck.

I just remembered, I can actually hear mine if i stand ouside the car with the hatch closed, coming from inside there somewhere. Some of it may be coming from somewhere else, but i think a lot of it is from the hatch.
From the looks of it, the bar that goes from the manual rear hatch lock, to the hatch release is a little loose, but i see no way to tighten it. I may just disconnect it if i can, since i never use a key to open it anyway.
I'm about to go out, so i'll give it a good listen and let you know if i pinpointed it.

Dynamat is an excellent solution for eliminating those annoying rattles in your carmaro. If you are really serious about having an excellent sound quality, you should buy it. The cheapest i've seen it is around $65 for a small kit on www.cmttrading.com.
In my camaro(89 Rs)i removed the emergency car jack, spare and all the plastic panels on the sides. I then lined dynamat behind all of it. I also removed the plastic cover on my motorized hatch release and cut a few small strips to line between the plastic and hatch motor. The motor continued to work with no problems and the car didn't rattle anymore
I would strongly recommend doing the same thing. The dynamat contains the sound within your car and provides a much clearer, more defined sound.
My 2 (12inch) JL Audio W6's make your neck hurt after a little while, but maybe your not looking for that much bass
, but if you are, seriously buy some of that dynamat
Good Luck fixing,

Tim89rs,
I had two MB Quarts, but I think i'm done with SQ only subs. Now i'm having a local guy build me a Snail Shell box. Similar to the ones on www.powered4sound.com.
If I did use some type of damping material, I don't think I'd spend that much on dynamat, I've heard there are other products that work as good and are a fraction of the cost, Brown bead, etc...
Surprisingly nothing else rattles on my car, so I don't really see a need for damping material any place other than the hatch area. If I was going for a competition system, you are right, I would use it everywhere.
