Audio portion of the Trans Am Roadster
I lose almost 90% of the SPL coming out of my 2 Infinity 1020w's with the top down. With the top up, the bass is perfect.
hence the reason I'm ditching the convertible top in favor of an RKSport style tonneau cover, and a removable fiberglass top (custom made thanks to my friend Todd's dad
)
What I want to do, is rid my car of the rear seats and create a box that looks like it belongs there. Probobly out of fiberglass, and painted to match the exterior.
Now, I'm still trying to decide the configuration of my sound system. I've been extremely impressed with everything Alpine, so I'd kinda like to showcase the brand. I want to put SPR 176A's in the doors. I'm wondering if I need any rear fill? Those rear speaker grilles are driving me nuts the way they buzz, so I'd like to actually cover that whole area. If rear fill is necessary, I'll figure something out to fix the buzzing.
Now for the box itself. I think the box itself is going to be 3 subs in one enclosure, each sub getting it's own airspace to play with. I want to work with each section being ported, and individually tuned to each speaker. I'm thinking of using one 12" SWR-1241 for the really low end (powered by one MRD-M500), which would be mounted in the center of the box. Now this is where it gets tricky. I'd like to have two 8" subs for really tight mid bass punch. Could I use another pair of SPR176A's without the tweeters for that purpose, or should I move over to Kicker S8D 2C's or something similar, each running off of 1 MRD-M300? Or, should I simply go with 3 tens, each getting an MRD-M300.
What I would do with 3 ten's, is have two subs responsible for the down low rumble, and one sub specifically for mid-bass. That way the sound is more clear.
And which Alpine crossover/EQ is the simplest, yet most feature packed? Crossovers are the one weak spot in my car audio knowledge.
And yes, I know this will cost an *** load of money, but that's of no concern right now

Most people with verts complain of the loss of sound with the top down. The only thing you could do is make a box where your rear seats are like you said.
1. rear fill is optional, it's really up to you if you like it or not. Some people like a loud rear fill others like none and some like just a very small amount (like me). IMO if you want you can run some rear speakers off the HU but don't put an amp to them.
2. your first idea (one 12 and 2 8s) would be an ok idea but only if you have the 12 in the rear and the 8s up front in the doors or kickpanels with the component set. You don't want midbass coming from the rear, it's parts of the soundstage and should come from infront of you.
your second idea with the 3 10s is a better one but you do not setup subs to play midbass frequencies. A 10" sub is a little big for a mid and again you don't want midbass coming from the rear. If you really want good midbass without too much trouble and custom kick panels I'd go with an 8" free air mid in the stock location, some custom work will be required.
Most decent amps out there (all apline's) come with a built in crossover. I'm not too sure about alpine's EQs but IMO put the system in and decide if you need it afterwards.
BTW, what ended up being wrong with your car the other day when it wouldn't start?
