Anyone know if iblew my sub?
Anyone know if iblew my sub?
I have a Sony Xplod Class D Amp: 600watts RMS @ 2 ohms
with MA Audio ma121xq DVC 4ohms.
The subs site says:
• 300W/350W Rms
• 600W/700W Max
• Dual 4-Ohm Voice Coils
I am not sure how to read this.
Well i had my setup workin for maybe a 1/2 hour. It sounded excellent and now it doesnt work. I checked all connections numerous times, Tried inputting via an ipod through rca and that didnt work either. The sub simply rattles and doesnt pump. It smells a bit burnt. Anything I can do for it or know for sure if it is dead?

test voice coil impedence that should tell u.

Re: Anyone know if iblew my sub?
Well, my subs are 1400watt max, 700RMS my amp is 1200, 600 RMS. Realistically you'd like to have your subs be able to sustain more power than you amp can push out, that way your sub is never pushed to full potential.
Your amp is a 1200 watt amp max, while your subs are only 700 watt max. Now if you didnt crank it ALL the way up, it shuoldnt hurt it, and even if you did, i woudlnt think a half hour would "blow" it. But that definately sounds like what happened, if it justs rattle, then yea.
If you bought it new, send it back, and get a sub that can handle the same amout of power your amp can push out. Hoped that helped.

Re: Anyone know if iblew my sub?
An amp dosn't push the max wattage all the time. The RMS power is the minimum amout of power it will constantly push out. You will typically blow a sub from not enough power then from too much power. Flex the sub in with your hand. If it makes a grinding noise, it's probably a blown voice coil. When you run DVC (dual voice coil) subs, you run a wire from the positive on one voice coil to the other positive, and the same with the negative terminals, then to the amp. Just making sure you had it ran right.

Yeah, if it smells burnt, it probably is. Especially if it no longer produces sound, and just rattles. I'd take it back and see if there's a warranty. Assuming your gains were set properly, it's possible you just got a lemon of a sub. I bought a pair of Audiobahns once and we spent an evening getting them all hooked up, played about 5 seconds of a song sounding really good and then one of them just died. It quit making bass, and rattled when it should have been hitting. They were brand new in the box when I got them, I guess somebody in Audiobahns QC was sleeping on the job that day.
It's also possible that you just got a not so good brand/model sub. If you get a replacement and it happens again, I'd go with something a little higher end. Elemental Designs is having a group buy and you can pick up an e13K v.2 for $75. It's really a 12, they just use the 13 as model number.

Re: Anyone know if iblew my sub?
30 straight minutes of clipping will blow any sub.
not saying thats what happened.. but it is possible to blow a sub in 30 minutes even if it handles more power than the amp puts out.. dirty power (clipping) will ruin any speaker.

Re: Anyone know if iblew my sub?
actually, clipping is caused by mismatched power ratings. Such things like running your brand new dual voice coil sub with an amp that's either too powerful,or not powerful enough....a very very fast way to blow subs and amps alike
Re: Anyone know if iblew my sub?
btw, i just read through what you listed up top, and your sub is nowhere near capable of handeling what your amp is putting out. rms is the continuous power your amp is going to send out. Since your amp is rated to 600 watts rms, and your sub is rated to 300 rms, 6 max, you more than likely exceded the max rating. Get another sub rated to 600 watts rms, then wire it for 2 ohms.
Re: Anyone know if iblew my sub?
*sniff* I smell improper break in. You play the subs at low levels for a good 20 hours and then start to turn it up a bit. Going from sitting on a shelf in a warehouse to ***** to the wall, among all the other things people mentioned above will trash a new sub.

actually clipping has to do with the voltage rails of the amps power supply and the input current. if you have too much input and the signal... wait let me just send you to the link.

as you can see clipping has nothign to do with mismatched power ratings but rather just an amp being pushed far beyond its limits.

iv done 4-5 total amped sound system for my last car (04 elantra) from 300 rms for 2 subs to 2500 rms.. ask away with questions
Re: Anyone know if iblew my sub?
put a 9 volt to the speaker... if it starts jumping cleanly(cant hear the voice coil really easy doing this) and if its clean/smooth jumping, its prob fine(not always though)... but if doesnt move/wierd... throw it away...
