Advise on upgrading speakers 2002 year Monsoon System

Wondering if the speakers are easy to switch out and replace with something like Polk or Kicker Speakers in the front and rear.

Circuit City guy said that I would need to redo the entire system including the head unit. I want to keep the existing stereo and I'm just wondering if upgrading the speakers will do the trick.

Also anyone know why it says that it's an eight speaker monsoon system when there are only 4 speakers in the car????

Thanks!

If they are not blown, don't bother with upgrade, will do nothing good. Even only good components in front hooked up to aftermarket HU without any amp will sound better.
Better eliminate Monsoon at all. If you want to keep stock HU, you can use adapter to 2 pairs of RCA's. 2 pairs of good speakers + amp + adapter can cost less then $300, sound you'll get = priceless.
