'96 SS Bose System?

I bought my Camaro used and as far as I can tell it has the stock Bose system, I know the previous owner messed with the system so I'm not 100% sure. It has 4 speakers and a sub in the trunk (Driver's Side Panel). Are there any hidden amplifiers in the doors or rear panels or are the amps mounted right on with the speakers?
I was going to start by just swapping headunits and doing speakers later but when I took it out I couldn't find where the antenna unplugs, the wire just goes right in and I don't want to pull to hard and break it, I followed the wire back and it goes into a roll of electrical tape. Should the plug be right on the back of the deck or is it in the middle of the wires.

I plan on replacing it with a Pioneer HU (4x50w), 4x6's in the rear, Infinity 6.5's in the doors, and an Audiobahn 12" powered by an Audiobahn 800 Watt Amp inside driver's side stealthbox (maybe, friend is helping me make the box). The setup worked fine in my truck although the sub was a bit overpowered (Lows on the equalizer were -4 and mids/highs were +6) I couldn't afford another amp at the time I bought it. I also need a place to put the Audiobahn amp if anyone has any suggestions besides an amp rack and above the gas tank, I'd prefer to keep as much trunk space as possible.

Any advice is appreciated, I'd like to know as much as possible before I start taking it apart again.

The front door speakers have individual amps on them. The amps for the sail panel speakers are in the sub enclosure along with the amp for the sub itself. The antenna should just unplug from the back of the factory head unit unless someone broke the end off and did some hack repair.

ok thanks for the info. It may very well be a hack job like you said, something didn't seem right when I was looking at it.

factory bose speakers will not work with a new head unit. new head unit will not work with bose speakers. the bose are wired at 2 ohm. so be careful.

BOSE system will work with new HU. It may not be the best setup but it does work. I still run my stock bose(all 5) with my setup until I get around to replacing them. No adapter either. Just need to wire the REM wire to turn on the amps.

Re: '96 SS Bose System?

I know on the Monsoon system, it's simply a matter of buying an adapter, or wiring it yourself... the stock amps simply take the speaker-out of the headunit to control the 6 main speakers... and the 4 remaining tweeters are powered directly off the headunit...

the only thing that bothers me about all that, is how are the tweeters protected? do they have their own 'network' that is mounted in the doors or what?

Chuckd4more--if you keep those speakers like they are you are looking for a blown head unit. The ohm difference will burn out your head unit regardless of how they appear to work NOW. ALWAYS replace your headunit/speakers if its a factory amplified system and you have replaced either the HU or speakers to aftermarket. Theres no mis-matching with these systems.

Madd, you are talking about the Monsoon systems right? Should I worry about my Headunit with the Bose speakers?

Re: '96 SS Bose System?

IDK why everyone says you can't just replace the headunit in a bose or monsoon system I have done it in a number of friends cars, as well as at work. Just wire it like anyother headunit and connect the remote wire so the amp turns on. Only think I have ever seen is that the volume **** is more sensitve. I have a buddy with monsoon who has been running like this for around 3 years, and a buddy with bose for about 2 years

Re: '96 SS Bose System?

The 'subs' for the bose systems are in the sail panels in the back seat. The other full range speaker is in the hatch.
