Thumbs down 4th Gen Convertible Rear SPeakers... Nightmare...

I almost ruined a set of perfectly good kickers in my convertible. I was setting up a component system for the front 5.75's and I moved my old kicker fronts to the rears and even these speakers which are hardly any deeper then stock touch the convertible hinges!

I installed them and they moved but when I tried putting the top back up it bent my speaker like crazy! I pulled it out and I had to solve the problem like this...

I cut a few small lengths of hose about a centimeter long and put them between the speaker and mounting surface to space it off. There is absolutely no way to keep a box of any sort around our rear convertible speakers so spacing the mounting surface doesn't take away any sound quality ;whatsoever.

Theres no room for any kinds of speakers back there!!!
I am mad although I did finish the job and my setup sounds nice so far... time for some bass*

WHAT DO MOST OF YOU GUYS DO???

I would replace those pieces of hose with an adapter ring instead. That will prevent the back wave from the speakers from leaking into the front of the speakers and possibly causing cancellation at some frequencies.

Yes sir...

I did a 96Z vert a while back, and I dont recall any mounting problems.

Definatly spring for the adapter. The only ones, most places stock are for 6.5's tho. I have them in.5 and 1".

I definately need to make the adaptors. I was looking at the front spacer and it was completely inadequite. it is made from brittle black plastic and I had to cut a piece out in the back for the larger magnet to fit. The plastic is splitting too...

What material is good for making these. I need to make a set for the front and the back* I would like to space them out a half inch in teh front and an inch in the back. ther eis platy of room for them to be spaced out but absolutely no room behind the speakers in the rear convertible panels.

mdf?

I would think somthing like the material you find plastic cutting boards made from or at least just thick NON-brittle plastic.

thanks guys.

Plywood or MDF (medium density fiberboard) will work for making your adapters.

See my response in the above post for where you can order some spacers if you want.

I recently installed some 6.5 Infinity Kappa 63.5's with the spacer rings and had no problem. They would not go in without them. I also have a convertible.

Sometimes you can flip the grill holder (for lack of a better term) around and use that for a spacer. most 6.5's should have them.
