1995 remote lock range and feedback

Our '95 Z28 has door remotes that are barely effective. You must stand about 3' away from the door to get them to work. I replaced the battery in one of them, thinking that was the issue, but it did not help. My '97 door remote works much better at at much further distance. Also the '97 car give audible feedback with the horn when you lock the door. I see a red blinker on the dash of the '97 that is not present on the '95. I'm guessing this is indicating a lack of alarm system on the older car, and that's why there's no audible feedback.

1. How can I increase the range of the remote? Can I replace the old one with a newer style like the '97?

2. Is there anyway to cause the horn to provide audible feedback on locking in the '95 like it does on the '97?
