Heh. When I had an auto '87 V6, 70 on the highway in the rain was no problem. In fact, I swerved around a dog in the road on the 610 feeder near TC Jester Blvd. in the rain at around 55. With no traction control or ABS, even. Part of why I love those cars.

Enjoy the SUV anyway, formula.

And PacerX, enjoy the... Cavalier?! To each his own.

* V6 '87 is still here. Now it's a T56 6-spd car waiting for me to find a job and a V8 (cheap LS1 anybody?). Gotta love the computer industry.

Find me a better car for ~$220 a month, NEW, with zero down.

Heh.... cheap LS1...

"Cheap" and "LS1" are terms that cannot co-exist.

Did you know that LS1 camshafts are more expensive than LT1 camshafts?

Somebody explain that one SLOWLY to me...

Actually I find used LS1's around central Indiana for around $10k with some regularity......

LS1 cams are more expensive due to a few basic reasons.....first is they are still relitavely new....as compared to the LT1 cam that is basically the same roller cam that has been around since the 80's. Secondly, they are sold to guys with cars that will spend the $$.

As far as our cars in the rain...I've NEVER had a problem...and I don't drive slow. With my new 275/40/17 Goodyear F1 GS D3's I can run at triple digits in the rain with no worries....

Reason #2 has truth to it, but Reason #1....

Camshafts are machined - ground actually, on CNC machinery.

The machine that does LT1 cams can do LS1 camshafts too. So, once you pay for the program (not too expensive), all ya do is chuck up a blank, pick a program, and let her rip.

Apart from the programming costs for a new cam, there's no difference in capital costs or labor or investment.

So, we're getting shafted... camshafted...

Ah, touche! I, too, would rather buy new than used.

I'll tell you why LS1 camshafts are more expensive: Because they can charge more! It's the newer engine. It's faster. It's prettier. For pete's sake it's all aluminum! That means big bucks in anybody's book.

But a guy can dream. Actually on eBay there's an LS1 with a "Buy it Now!" price of $3,600.

Right, eBay, I know.

Well, try buying an LS1 camshaft for an LS1 Corvette, and watch the price double!

lobe,

I looked at Sunfires, but at the moment in my region the Sunfires are eligible for a $4000 rebate or 0% financing.

Cavaliers are eligible for a $4000 rebate or a $1000 rebate AND 0% financing.

That makes it a Cavalier.

Now - updated news. My local dealer has located a white Cavalier. We'll see if it is still available today.

Yeah, not with those damn stock tires. They're pathetic. Now in my LS1 Z with BFGoodrich g-Force T/A tires (and no ASR) mine holds great, even in the rain. Still have to have a light foot with all that power though.

Firestone Firehawk Sz50ep's are good too! I can take those to a point where I wouldn't have dared with the stock tires. 70MPH in a downpour and no significant amount of hydroplaning?!?!

I know GM is supposed to be pretty careful when they choose the stock tires, but I don't know what happend with the F-body....Goodyear GSC's and GA's ain't worth their rubber.

Not mine. I had to be VERY careful. Hell, I could be sitting for a while spinning the tires even in dry weather if I pushed the pedal down enough (with no mods) and I have an automatic but if it went into passing gear as I was changing lanes the back end would try to come around. Not cool.

You know I have to say that the Goodyear RSAs on my 02 Z28 do a pretty good job in the rain at 70-85 mph. But then again, I have gotten on top of the water with them. Not a good feeling either.

Hey PacerX if the Camaro was still around, would you still be looking for a Cav?

Actually, I'm buying the Cavalier because of the Camaro.

See, the Camaro isn't too good on snow, and it snows here. So, I need a beater - a role fulfilled by my Aries up until this point. Alas, the Aries is starting to cost me more in repairs than the payment on a new car - or at least close enough that continuing to put money in it is becoming pointless.

Good point. And if you are getting a beater, why not go ahead and get one with a little umphh to it via that factory supercharger.
