from Mellor's....
More muscle for
the US Monaro
THE Holden Monaro V8's power level
will be boosted beyond 260kW when
it goes on sale in the US late next year as a reborn
Pontiac GTO.
GM product czar Bob Lutz – who has driven the whole
Monaro for the US project – has ordained the GTO
must have around 350hp, which equates to 261kW.
The standard Monaro Gen III Chevrolet V8 produces
225kW from its 5.7-litre capacity.
The revised figure means the Monaro would then
outgun the hot HSV Coupe GTO version of the
Monaro which produces 255kW.
But there appears no possibility of a 260kW V8
option being offered with Monaro in Australia.
Increasing Monaro's power output should be no
challenge because the same engine already
produces 350bhp in standard trim in the Chevrolet
Corvette.
The power boost could also mean upgrades to
Monaro suspension and braking systems.
"For a car to be credible, accepted as a rebirth of the
rear-drive American muscle car, it has got to have
that rocket-sled acceleration off the line," Mr Lutz
was quoted as saying at a media event in
Germany. "We'll offer American-style off-the-line
performance of squealing tyres."
Confirmation of Monaro export to the US is expected

Unhappy

back to the subject at hand, I really doubt we'll see a judge. Even if we do, it'll be nothing more than a sticker package I'm sure. Blame my pessimism on the 50th vette.

By "Judge", do you mean a decontented, cheaper GTO, named after the 1968 slang phrase..."Here come de judge"...and priced to compete with the affordable Plymouth Road Runner.

....because that's what a Judge was.

I'm not saying that was a bad thing.

It's just that I've noticed that some people think the "Judge" was some sort of super duper higher performance GTO...and that couldn't be further from the truth.

.....reminds me of the Camaro SS debate.

You guys need to pull your heads out and do a little more research on "The Judge".

The great one?
It was never meant that. Try Gran Turismo Omolagato(sp), Comes from ferrari I believe.

Tell me a ram-air IV Judge was cheaper/suckier form of a goat.

The Great one is an add campain they ran in the 60's. The commercials tried to use "The Great One" as a tag line because of teh GTO's letters. I know teh literal meaning

They actually turned out to be not cheaper than a regular GTO because most people who ordered one ...usually optioned it out (as were most Road Runners)...so the average sales price was relatively high.

If you find a Ram Air IV Judge...it's because someone purposely "checked off" that option code and ordered it with Ram Air IV....just like you could in any GTO.

There was nothing performance related on a Judge that couldn't be had on a regular GTO.

....unless you count the weight savings from the deleted wheel trim rings.

In the July/August 2002 issue of Pontiac Enthusiast, they talk about the GTO term "The Great One". Jim Wangers wanted to do an ad campaign calling the GTO a "Goat", it's nickname on the street. GM would not approve. Wangers, in a letter, complained to Delorean about the death of his idea. Delorean kicked it up to John Malone (Pontiac's ad manager) with instructions to run the ad without GM approval. Malone knew better. He showed Wangers letter to GM management. Next thing he knows, Wangers is in his boss's (Ernie Jones) office being told he was fired for "offending GM's ad manager". He wasn't fired.
And from the gist of this article, it looks like the term, "The Great One" was borne out of this advertising flub.
This article is another must read along with Wangers' own book "Glory Days".

The GTO had lots of nicknames and yes it means Gran Turismo Omolagato and it was taken from the Ferrari GTO series. Many of you say its a crime to put GTO on a Monaro but in the 60's it was a bigger crime or joke to put GTO on a Pontiac LeMans mid-sized coupe. To even compare the great Ferrari to a LeMans was a real crime! But it happened and we all know how it turned out. The GTO name is an American Muscle Car icon and more powerful than the GTO name that Ferrari developed.
