So two governments with huge debts that they have no hope of ever paying off, and ever increasing deficits, are going to turn around a company that also has out of control debt?

GM is no longer part of the DJIA. Nor is Citigroup.

And now that GM is bankrupt, think about the various companies it owed money to, or the industries that provided the materials to build cars. Like parts suppliers who depended on GM and Chrysler's business, and will probably have to lay off a lot of workers or close outright. Or the steel industry, which is already hurting because of the economy and is going to get worse. See where I'm going with this?

The Big 3, and GM especially, are an integral part of our economy. Everything's connected, and now that GM and Chrysler have gone bankrupt, it's going to have a ripple effect.

You're correct. I should have said "bite the dust".

In that case, I think you're not completely up to speed on what's happening. GM is changing hands, restructuring, and maybe changing its name, but it's not going away.

Oh, I'm up to speed. The GM that has existed for 100 years has bitten the dust. A new GM will arise from the ashes.
