Whitacre: General Motors will roll out new models early
stick with cobalt name [it's not too late to reverse that decision] and ready the new engines quicker. the hold up is the 1.4 DI turbo...I believe. I hope this will be the standard engine. a 2.4 DI would be make for a strongly efficient almost midsize upscale high quality and sporty sedan. cruze, wait i forgot, cobalt, has a lot of potential. it's too bad they've already put a lot of effort into the cruze name...but it's not too late!
Every review I've seen they liked the Cruze but hated the engine so your probably right about that.
The board's initial deliberations included analyzing and altering GM's future product plan. Though Whitacre was not specific, he said the board is focused on more fuel-efficient and reliable models.
"We will make a major thrust in that direction," he said. "We made some tweaks and changes. We looked at maybe time schedules for introducing new vehicles. We moved it up."
GM must alter its product plans because it lacks funding for certain products in the pipeline, most notably two new Cadillac sedans, said auto analyst Jim Hall of 2953 Analytics.
The automaker might want to pull ahead a new Chevrolet Malibu and a rumored Buick-version of the Chevrolet Cruze compact car, he said. The Chevrolet Cruze, which goes into production next year, will get about 40 miles per gallon.
"Fuel-efficient, midsize cars will help tremendously," Hall said.

Not sure why they would want to pull ahead a new Malibu before Impala...

I think bringing the new Malibu would make sense. It is on par with the current sedans, and in some areas lacking. Why not take the lead and have the best small car (Cruze if it is the best), a the best mid size car in the Malibu? Hopefully they are they best when they are released and can maintained will with upgrades going forward.
