When you hear "SS", which car do you think of?
When you hear "SS", which car do you think of?
I think of Chevelle SS first, then Impala SS and Nova SS .......and way down on the list Camaro SS (eventhough I once owned a '70 Camaro SS).

This is MY OPINION - SS-popularity based on everyday conversations I have with friends and such...
I think Chevelle SS if the context of the conversation is cars.
Next would be the '90's Impala SS due to recent popularity.
Next would be the '80's model Monte Carlo SS (I LOVE that car).
Then the 454 SS (which is most common in truck-talk 'round here).
Then the "other" SS's like the older Novas, Camaros, and Impys.
Then the newer cars like the new Impy's and Monte's (people just don't know about them yet).
I'm getting more used to associating the Trailblazer with the SS, but it still doesn't feel quite right.
The last thing I think of when I hear SS is the actual SS concept car - it HAS NO street history yet.
Z284ever, why you doin' this to us again?!?!
You know it's only gonna take about a dozen posts and we are gonna be discussing why I think the Z/28 is a better candidate for top dog than the now-commonplace SS...
And then the flamesuits come out!!!
J/K with you! You know where I stand.

But seriously, SS elicits different things to different people. I was curious where everyone stood.
I think of a circa1970 Chevelle when I think of "SS"
I guess I'm old. I suppose this is a good argument for keeping the Z28 moniker for the Camaro.
Personally, I grew up with Z28s as the embodiment of Camaro performance. I disagree with Chevy slapping "SS" on everything. To me, it dilutes it's meaning.

If we're not talking about a specific car....these are general features that "SS" makes me think of:
1) "Sporty" performance, not necessarily all out performance.
2) Automatic transmissions.
3) Uplevel trim.

I must say that I think the SS's "dress and bells" packaging has become more predominant in the last decade or so more than ever before. Let's be honest, isn't the SS just a prcier version of the Z/28 with more flash and luxury? It sure doesn't run any faster or handle any better, so where's the performance gain over the Z to go with any SS badging?
Some love it - and that's OK. But I agree w/Charlie, it's becoming so watered down now that SS is losing any "special meaning", whether it's on the Camaro or the Trailblazer.
BTW - didn't anybody like the Z-71 on the trucks and Z-72 on the Blazer's? I liked those labels oodles better than "SS" on a truck or SUV, and they allowed uniquesness. JMO.

This thoughtless formula stripped the Z/28 of ALL that makes it a Z/28.....and turned the SS from an affordable sporty package into a very expensive trim package.
What a lost opportunity to do the right thing for Camaro.
I guess if I'm near or in my car I think of a Camaro obviously but out side of that context the 454 Chevelle is the first thing to pop into mind.
The Monte and those others only if they are mentioned.

Chevelle SS, then I think of a 69 Camaro SS... last is the Nova SS then Imapala.
I dont really think about modern cars at all. To me the SS era was the late 60s. I dont even think about the 1970 Camaro SS.

Z284ever,
This thread is moving along nicely - I'm kinda shocked!
We had this poll-crazy atmosphere a couple weeks back. I'm just wondering how this would have gone on a poll?
Looks to me like the Chevelle is leading the way handily at this point. Hard to believe so many think of the Chevelle when they hear "SS", but marketing folks at the General's House decided to name an entire concept car the same letters, no? Why name a car after a trim package for Pete's sake? And to not expect confusion over that is downright silly IMO.
Now Ford is being forced to do so by a lawsuit over the GT-40...
I'm still calling it the GT-40, I don't care what the judge says!!!
