Don't forget that none other than Rolls Royce also used GM hydramatics for a very long time as well, til just a few years ago.

GM has a 6 speed RWD automatic coming out that can handle a lot of torque, It is going into the trucks (and V12 Escalade) I'm sure they wanted this for the Vette but it appearantly wasn't ready in time.

I knew I had this somewhere:

GM TO BUILD 6-SPEED REAR-WHEEL-DRIVE TRANSMISSION AT WILLOW RUN PLANT
Ypsilanti, Mich.- General Motors announced today it will invest approximately $300 million in its Willow Run (Mich.) plant to produce a new 6-speed rear-wheel-drive automatic transmission...

...The transmission will be used in future GM cars and trucks beginning in 2006.

The GM Powertrain Willow Run transmission plant produces the Hydra-Matic 4L80-E(4-speed rear-wheel- drive) transmission for full-size trucks, sport-utility vehicles and large vans, and the 4T80-E(4-speed front- wheel-drive) for luxury cars. The plant also produces transmission components for several other GM transmission models....

Ah, thanks for posting. I wasn't sure if the six speed rwd had been announced (as though no one would guess it after announcing a six speed fwd). There will be several levels of the rwd, I believe in a common case design. It will be capable of some serious torque numbers, and will be used in many applications in a few short years. I've driven one vehicle with it so far...

So just one question was it 1 or 2 overdrives. I would think 2 b/c of cafe and the fact it is designed for trucks. If you can't say dat be coo too.

When announced it was refering to 2006 for the 2007 model year.

The car trannys will be used in the CTS, STS, & assuming Park Avenue's replacement comes out by the end of '06, the 2007 Buick large car as well.

The transmission will also be exported to Holden to use in their new Zeta VE cars, from the very start. They may even get the tranny 1st.

I don't care if it has 1, 2, or no overdrive gears - the overall gear spread is what interests me. Everything else can be taken care of with final-drive ratios.

Anyone remember a couple of years ago when GM was selling it's 5 speed automatics to BMW but still giving it's own Cadillacs 4 speeds?

that's because the 5 speeds are RWD... what is the last pre-CTS RWD Caddy you remember?

BTW, did anyone notice a trend here? a lot of companies used to buy transmissions from GM. a leading company should always be leading so that their customers have no reason to start looking anywhere else. if GM already had its 6 speed autos, you can almost bet BMW and RR would still be shopping at GM Powertrain.
