Whats going on with GM full size pick ups ?
Whats going on with GM full size pick ups ?
They have fallen TERRIBLY behind in just about every catagtory when compared to whats currently out there . I'm not a truck guy at all , but Im not seeing how anyone would choose the current Silvarado/Sierra over the new Ram or F-150 . When is Chevy supposed to get a new full size truck ?
I don't think it is too far behind. (As far as the next generation coming along, that is.)
Keep in mind that the new (1999) Silverado came out when the F-150 and Ram were already 'old', especially the Ram...
Everything goes in cycles....

I believe I have heard that a new Silverado/Sierra is in the works for somewhere around MY2006... but I cannot confirm that.
While I agree the new F150 is a darn nice truck I would like to remind you all of what truck won the Motor Trend Truck of the year for Three years in a row. The currant Chevy/GMC are very nice trucks and will continue to sell for a very long time. Look at how long the old platform sold for and was competitive. I too would like to see a NEW truck but the timming for this is going to be best when the new F150 is old news and Chevy can once again be fresh to public eyes.
Just for grins in a new truck I'd like to see...
1.) Higher standard load capacities
2.) higher standard power output
3.) Contractor freindly controls, as a contractor when I get into a truck I wan't to feel comfortable with bulky winter clothes and gloves on which means larger ***** and buttons for when I have gloves on and also more power outlets and hookups for laptops and computers and cell phones. Possibly a nicer console lid for organization.
4.) while on the contractor issue, I like the side doors on the beds your seeing on concept trucks. I just hope I can use it some how when I've got my tool boxes mounted on them.
5.) I want my truck looking MEAN, I like the currant front end for this reason alone. I also like the old F-250 look as well for it's brawnish looks.
6.) I love the seats of the currant platform, I think they are possibly the most comfortable truck seats I've ever sat in. More leg room in back would be nice though.
7.) Please keep the clearance lights as an option on the roof, I love those!
8.) This should be #1 but I love how the currant truck has lots of ground clearance while still keeping my bed lower to the ground than the Ford and Dodge. I have all three in my fleet and the Chevrolet's are the ones every one likes the most. When you are lugging material around it sucks lifting any thing really heavy that extra inch or Two!!!
There thats it I'm done!

Actually their streak was broken up by the Tundra in 2000
1999 - Chevy Silverado won
2000 - Toyota Tundra won
2001 - Chevy Silverado HD
2002 - Chevrolet Avalanche
2003 - Dodge Ram
2004 - Ford F-150.
but yes I agree with you on everything else.
PS for what it's worth the F-150 though a good truck is a heavy pig and exterior wise I would prefer the Silvy/Sierra over it.

Now we have a better Tundra, the Titan, while I wouldn't touch it, is amazing for Nissan's first full size, and even won a C&D comparo that put the Silverado last for well, what it is, and isn't. I love the Silverado, and if I didn't drive so much, I'd own one...but gas would kill me. For now though, Chevy is outgunned by the competition. But again, Chevy outgunned the others for awhile. They're fresh, and Chevy isn't. It'll change.
But Nissan pulling out the Titan makes me nervous about U.S. supremacy in trucks...

this is just my opinion but the 03+ front end is ugly enough to make me not want to buy one. My dad was shopping for trucks and waited for the 03 to come out. As soon as it did, he immediately bought an '02. You are now the second person ive heard really like it. (yes, i am keeping track
) Anyway, about it being lighter... chevy's biggest motor is the 5.3. Dodge has a 5.7 hemi, and a 5.9 360. That has to be worth a few lbs. Also its frame was drastically beefed up in the latest generation. Also probably worth a few lbs.Im happy with my '92 GMC 1500 w/ 178k as of now... but if I wasnt 17, and had money to buy a truck, I can honestly say it would be a dodge. more hp, and IMO better looks.

Do you like the looks of the Silverado SS?
The CID displacement has nothing to do with vehicle weight
althought OHC Triton probably does weigh more (OHC engines wiegh more then pushrods) the the Hemi and Vortec.

I hated the new Chevy front end at first, but as with every major redesign, it has totally grown on me and now I love it. My supervisor/friend just bought an '03 Avalanche Z71 WITHOUT the body armour. Everyone who has seen, driven, or rode in it says it is the sweetest truck they've ever encountered overall including appearance, ride, and performance.
Their is nothing wrong with GM powertrains either. Horsepower arguements get blown way out of proportion. I get tired of hearing people talk about how they chose their mini van over others because the dealer told them it had 240hp. Please!
Buy the truck you like and for a little more dough you can have all the hp you want. People who don't know anything about cars are the ones who get caught up in the stock vs. stock hp wars. I personally would never go buy a Ford or Dodge because they have more hp.
My $0.02,

I liked the front-end on the original Avalanche, the whole package went together (except for the wheels being too small), but the front doesn't work well on the regular Silverado. The Silverado needs a real makeover. I would pick the GMC between the two.
It would come down to price, but the Silverado is lower on the "want" list. I would "want" either the Dodge or the Titan first. I have driven a Hemi quad-cab, and it was really nice. I haven't driven a Titan, but it looks really good on paper and on the road. I've never really been into Fords, but the new F150 looks really good in person as well.

ha! I hear that lots of people don't like the front end as well. Part of the reason I do like it is that the 99-02 front end looked so similar to the 96-99---and the 03+ they finally gave it an identity. Plus the new front end does have a bit of meaness to it.

dont forget about toyota
i absolutely hate the front end on the 03+ chevys and i think the colorado is terrible. id much rather have an s10. anyways as far as full size trucks i have driven the ford, chevy, and toyota. i dont care much for the ford, i like chevy besides the front end, and i drive an 01 tundra everyday for work. im a chevy man throughout but the tundra gives the others a run for the money. the v6 in them is solid and the iforce v8 is pretty awesome. my only complaints about toyota is the interior is very bland and the stepsides look goofy.
