What would you say would be the surpise collector sports coupe from the last 20 years
What would you say would be the surpise collector sports coupe from the last 20 years
I know this will sound odd...but I would say...
The 87-88 Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe..
Support for my case..
*2.3L Turbo engine though based on a Pinto version made 200HP nearly as much as the 5.0L and as much as any production force-fed 4 banger today.
*Awesome handling, skidpad numbers the same as a 4th Gen Z28.
*One of Ford's first cars with ABS and at the time Motor Trend tested it, the best stopping car in the world.
*Room for 5 easily
*Very light for the size... 3400LBS
*Disitinctive design still looks good today....
*One of the first affordable cars with an automaticly adjustable suspension...
They only made 40,000 in the 2 years they made it and many are in junk yards. The combo of alot of electronics and expensive repairs made the cars too expensive to fix and alot of people simply junked them.
The price of the ones that are still around bottomed out and is now steadily rising. One with only 6,000 miles on it recently apraised for $19,000.

The GN is already wildly collectable...75% of the US male population would trade their signifigant other for one.

Well, I think those two became those 'diamonds in the rough'
OK, I'll pick the 1990 Turbo Grand Prix. It was a one year car with a one year look.
Turbo Grand Nationals, GNXs, and Turbo Trans Ams were all pretty collectable from the day the factories stopped churning them out, so there's nothing surprising about those.
GM & Chrysler pretty much gave up on collectable coupes when they went FWD, so I'd pretty much set those aside except the final years of the Grand Prix GTP coupe. However, most people don't even know they stopped making those yet, but that would be my only vote for anything from GM that would be a surprise collectable.
Ford on the other hand, it's almost like take your pick?
SVO Mustangs, Thunderbird Turbo Coupes, Thunderbird Super Coupes, even later Mustang 5.0 notchbacks and "special service" Mustangs, 5.0 Cobras, Mustang GTSs, even the quad cam V8 Lincoln Mark VIII all have the combination of a devoted & growing following combined with reasonably steady or slight apprieciation in prices.
My top 3 picks are:
1. Thunderbird SC (even though some are 14 years old, it's still very hard to find a crappy looking one. The early SC's components are built to last, but when something does go wrong, it's going to cost a kidney to replace it
).
2. Mustang Special Service coupes (the most hardest to find of all modern Mustangs, and the only way those things break down is by running them into a tree!)
3. The later versions of the Thunderbird Turbo Coupe (These are SVO Mustangs without the hard life, but with 400 extra pounds. Also most all Fox body & SVO upgrades bolt right on!)
I'd include Fiero as honorable mention, but only the V6 Formula & GT the final couple of years of production (you can seemingly bolt anything in that engine bay. I've personally seen a smallblock 350 as well as a supercharged Buick V6 in there).

I got a couple for ya...
1) Dodge Omni GLH. Don't laugh. Go find one. Pick up an old Motor Trend and see what those suckers put out.
2) For that matter, anything Shelby Turbo '80s Dodge. Not many left, a lot of performance for the $$, and these things still have cheap mods that make them even faster...if you can keep them running
3) '93 Daytona IROC Turbo. 224hp. 0-60 in 5.9 seconds. Goes in snow. Yummy
4) Anything with an H.O. Quad 4...Cutlass Calais International Series, Grand Am SEs, Grand Am GTs...again, try to find one...then see what people are modding them to. I've seen a Grand Am SE with a Quad 4 H.O. running 12s!
Just my .02...

^qoad 4 cars maybe... but i disagree on the daytonas and and all the other turbo 4 dodge cars
no one wants those! they're lemons, they only perform well for about a week and then the wheels fall
but i agree with everyone on the SVO
who would have thunk it that a 4-cyl stang could be so cool?
i'm also a little partial to the cobra 2 but those aren't sought after at all
i'm also surprised people still like the old CRX
