As Camaro moves upstream price-wise, what happens to Chevy's entry level performance options? I mean something fun to drive for around $20K. The closest thing price-wise in the Chevy showroom, is the Cobalt SS, but that's pushing $24K and it won't be around for too much longer.
Now for $20K, we're not necessarily talking cars which can take down pricey performers, just something fun to drive, with a good street image. Think, Mini Cooper, Scion tC or Mazda3.
I'd imagine a performance version of Cruze would certainly cost more than a Cobalt SS. Where do we go from here? I'm thinking something neat on Gamma. Something that handles really well, has enough power to be interesting and is bundled into some appealing marketing package. BTW, I also think the "SS sub-brand" has run out of steam as a marketing strategy.

Some trim level of Cruise (SS), I would imagine, will fill that $20-$25k slot.
Is the Spark/Beat coming to America eventually? That would be about the only thing I can think of in the possibly "fun to drive" category for under $20,000. Aveo certainly won't fit the bill.

Correction, the MSRP may be $21,244; however, I challenge you to find one a dealer is willing to sell at that price.
I'm serious about Aveo. Along with the new design, Chevy can create a huge accessory catalog and target young first time buyers. A turbo version, even as small as a 1.0-1.2 liter, could easily be packaged as an entry level performance Chevy.

Suspension package and the 1.4L Turbo for no more than $2500 over the regular price could work. I'd call it Aveo Sport
