What don't you want on an 5th gen.

I was just wondering from a styling stand point what everyone disliked over the generations and never wants to see again.

My list:

1.Base steering wheels (could they make them any uglier) (all gens)
2. Disco graphics (late 2nd)
3. Tu-tone paint (2nd 3rd)
4. RS (4th)
5. "CAMARO CAMARO CAMARO CAMARO" interior (3rd)
6. "IROC-Z" emblazoned on the door (3rd) (or any graphics)
7. The way the fenders molded to the mirror on 4th gen.
8. All 4th gen wheels except for ZR-1 type
9. Tacked on look of 1st gen rear spoiler.
10. Phony hood scoops (77-79 Z28/IROC/LT-1 Z28)
11. Hubcaps (all gens)
12. SS scoop looked like an it didn't belong (4th)
13. 91-92 Z28 spoiler (at the time I thought it was rediculous but after 11 years it's starting to grow on me)

I never liked the two tone black roof on the 4th gens.

I never liked the fake hood louvers on the 3rd gens.

I never liked those Trans Am inspired "spats" on the rear wheel wells of '80-'81 Z/28's.

RS?!?!? Thats Camaro history right there.....they need to make the RS what it once was, an appearance package.

And the SS hood scoop is one of the best looking hoods for the 4th gens. I dont understand I guesss what you mean whn you say it looks like it didnt belong. To me it fits right in, and follows the lines and curves of the car.

Just my opinion. If you like it and think it fits in with the rest of the design thats great. I didn't mean to eliminate the RS just make it better. The G/FX on the 4th gen didn't help.

If I remember correctly there was an optional steering wheel on the 1st gen. The car in that picture looks as if it is pretty well optioned up.

That's my car.

It's the standard steering wheel, with the RS horn cap.

For some reason I picture in my head a two spoke as the standard wheel on the first gen. I just checked out your pics. Those Torq Thrusts on a 1st gen look awsome. I like the color also. I was never really into 1st gens, but lately I've been getting into them more.

The wheel you might be thinking of is the optional "rosewood" IIRC wheels. I HATED it in my first gen. That may not be the correct name, after not having one for 2+ years, my memory is starting to fade.

Yeah, I didn't like the Torque Thrusts at first, but now they're kind of growing on me.

Ok, I'm sorry, big mistake. My steering wheel is the Deluxe model. The Standard 67-68 came without the chrome on the spokes. The 67 and 68 Deluxe wheels are similar but slightly different. In 69 they introduced the BIG two spoke wheel with the fake wood grain horn button/bar that was integrated in the spokes. (Probably the one you were thinking of steves.)

In 67-68 you could get an optional "Walnut" wood steering wheel with chromed three spokes. In 69 they changed over to "Rosewood". (Good memory Jake.) They also offered the three spoke comfort grip steering wheel in 69.

... and of course I left out the 68-69 SS wheel which was a three spoke that color matched the interior.

Styling standpoint?

Camaro was always contemporary, very much in tune with the style or fashion of the day, so I wouldn't think "disco" stripes, 2 tone paint, or the large wing of the last 3rd gen Z28s (the one Camaro item ahead of it's time??) would make a return unless it bacame fashionable again.

What I would like to see return are:

1. Recessed headlights. In every car that has them (not just the 4th gen) they look agressive.

2. The "Racing Coupe" look. The fastback Camaro's had since the 2nd gen looks good, and I don't know how you'd be able to engineeer T-tops into the car without looking like it was done by the aftermarket, but hey, you asked.

3. Alumunum or wood trim in the interior. The 4th gen interior was as bland as the 2nd gen's interior was inviting. 2nd gen Camaro's woodgrain and Trans Am's turned metal dash & interior trim gave the cars a stop dead in your tracks, and check it out quality in it's day. Someone else said it before, and I'll second it, the late 70s Pontiac Trans Am interior is perhaps the best looking interior ever put in an F-body IMHO.

Beyond these, I'm just going to have to trust the product guys at GM to make the 5th gen up to date and good looking, and GM's management not to let the next gen F-body go stale and wither on the vine.

Actually the early IROC steering wheels before air bags, are probbaly my favorite stock wheels ever.

I agree on the fake hood scoops. Even though I dont think they looked bad, it still bothers me that they arent functional.

Some good looking steering wheels would be welcomed.

The base 3rd gen steering wheel...(the one with the big rectangle in the center)....was just bizzare.

The 4th gen steering wheel was just plain ugly.

Right that square one sucks Mine has the one with the circular center and the 3 spokes. Kinda looks like a grant GT wheel, just with a camaro symbol in the center
