What do we think about a NA, 2.5L, 225 hp, I4 as base motor for...
Considering the V6 3800 4th gen was 200hp at 3400ish lbs. and the base v6 Mustang is 3500ish at 305hp now, I think it should be at least up around 275-290 with one of the turbo DI ecotecs as a base . The turbo DI engine would give the Camaro the torque this car should have . Unless its the intended goal to slow it down and make the base gen 6 more of base car , 225 hp out a N/A 4 would set the base Camaro back into the upper 15 sec bracket 1/4 mile wise . 1/4 times dont define a car , but just using it as an example . It would be getting toasted by most v6 family sedans , lol .

I think that will work just fine as long as power to weight and 0-60 & 1/4mi. times are in line with the 3800 V6 4th gen Camaros.
I'd rather own a 4cyl. Camaro than a 4cyl. Civic, Focus, or Kia coupe.

Or even on par with something like the GN..I mean in the spirit of it. Its a rocket of a car with a 4 banger engine. And who knows what the next gen Camaro will look like. It mgiht fit the body more having that engine? ANd maybe the RS name on it for the "rally" aspect?
But what if it was on par with another 4 banger muscle car like the 80's SVO Mustang. For its time it was a beast and still is..

Not unless it also means a reduction in base price. Yes the car will be about 12.5% lighter (hopefully based on the number Charlie estimated) but having the base engine HP reduced by 27% is not the best thing to do unless the price is adjusted as well. Chevy would be killed in the car mags and reviews for doing such a move. It all has to do with perception.
Maybe Chevy can supercharge the new engine or turbo it (I would rather see a supercharger with a blow-off valve to help fuel economy than a turbo) to get the base HP up some so long as the price is similar to what it is now...adjusting for inflation of course.
IMHO

V6 and V8 engines will be limited to luxury and high performance cars within a couple of years. The 2.5L I4 will be perfectly adequate for the base Camaro if the weight can be brought down to under 3400 lbs and if it can get at least 22 mpg on the EPA city test. I think the 2.4L in the Regal and LaCrosse getting only 19 mpg in the city is ridiculous.

The Camaro needs the torque of the turbo engines .
