'06 Impala SS Update
While talking with one of our GM friends, we kept needling him for information about the rumored rear-drive Impala that's on the horizon. That it's coming is a badly kept secret in Detroit, but we pressed for more details-like when and why not sooner?
Although we couldn't get a straight answer, our contact just grinned when we asked if it would be out sometime next year (2005) as an '06 model. That's just in time to compete with the upcoming Dodge Charger sedan. Our contact did offer a few words, though: "It will blow you away."

This is the second article I have seen from a magazine in the past week that says the Impala is going RWD - as far as I've been able to confirm or get any sense able reasoning is that it stays FWD.
Zeta won't be ready. The plant that will build Zeta (Hamtramck) won't be retooled in time for an 05 release.

wasn't there a post recently about a camo'd Impala mule running about? considering how similar it looked to the current one (of what could be seen) it's doubtful it was RWD. maybe just eager-beaver reporting here?
There is no way in hell that we will see a RWD Impalla unless Holden feels like making a few hundred thousand Impalla's for us next year.
When Zeta comes, then we will see it. Im sure there are Impalla Zeta mules running around.

It would be nice if the impy got a re-vamp ... it would actually be a classy car like it used to be instead of the plain old 'whimpala' we have today and im guessing it would be a competitor of the 300C

AWD is a good thing though
seems like a lot of work for a chassis thats on its way out the door. I belive there is a lot more to developing an AWD system for the W body then just adding a few parts. Just seems like a waste of money.
Who says this chassis is out of the door?
Anybody here heard of a platform called Chi? Ut oh! Perhaps an AWD, FWD platform to base the Impala/Monte off of and wait...how about the Deville, err DTS?
Connect the dots people.
Lutz said in an interview a few weeks ago that GM had and AWD program on board -but HE decided it was against GM's "best interests."
Just like Portholes, eh Mr. Lutz? Now look every future Buick, including the Velite has them!
