(Video) 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Hits the Nürburgring
Would seem that this scenario plays into the realm of guionM's thread a few months back about "ever-increasing power but ever-smaller results".
I have said for a LONG time on this board that more power does not directly result in more speed. For the 1/4-mile gearheads here - they will argue that it does and I will conceed defeat to a point, but even in that genre, it's not an absolute.
Throw in some turns, and the game gets really different.
Throw in a track 2-3 miles long with lots of lefts and rights, and the difference really starts to change.
Make the course over 20 miles long with bunches of elevation changes, curves, braking, accel, and other maneuvers and the power almost becomes a non-issue.
MuscleMustangs did an article last year in which Jim Campisano took his street-legal 97 Cobra with suspension upgrades and engine massage and ran as fast on a road course as a Ford GT (same driver, both cars). After all the BS-dust had settled, the physics behind it really made sense.
Same scenario was discussed here on this board about the GT500 and the Terminator Cobras... why didn't another 100+hp make the car a second faster in the quarter, and why wasn't it 3 seconds faster on a closed track?
Boil it all down, I still maintain that we are seeing the pinnacle of the power race this very year, and that the race will begin to be "fast and fuel-efficient". Personally, I'd rather have a less powerful car that handles great and call it a day. Power you can't use is...well... useless.
Love the ZR1, but I'd have no problems putting a Z06 in the driveway instead.

I think we should just wait for an official time, on dry pavement. I believe it will be faster than the Z06 and faster than any model of the GTR that is showroom stock down to tires. If the GTR times are quoted on slicks then its an unfair comparison to start.

I was under the impression that the Z06 had the stock runflats on the car for its run. If someone can find proof of that or not that'd be appreciated. Or even what the hell the GT-R was running since now im reading it may have just been a typo that it had slicks?
Confusing.. grr
".well maybe not the king, but without a doubt part of the nobility. 7 minutes, 43 seconds. How about them apples! In a rather stunning announcement by Dave Hill, the Corvette Platform manager, confirmed that Jan Magnussen lapped the Nurburing in 7:43 in an unmodified, stock tire, 2006 Corvette Z06."
