US aid in Domestic automakers?, where is the break point?

Well, looking at Delphi... looking at UAW... looking at GM's north american financial situation...

At what point is it a better financial decision for the government to aid the domestic automakers?

The question, when GM, Ford, or Chyrsler file for Bankrupsy... how much will it cost the governement? How much will the unemployement tab run up? If the governement must foot the bill for 1 million employees that used to be making 60k a year for the last 15-20 years, how much will it cost them, (us Citizens)? How much will it cost the government(tax payers) to release GM of all its debt?

I'm assuming we are talking about nearly 500 billion dollars might barely cover it all... just for GM... If they were to go bankrupt...

And if that were the case, the Domestics started going under... then what realistically can we expect to see of the ecconomy? inflation? taxes?

At what point is it a better financial decision for the government to aid the domestic automakers?

And at what point is it too late? Where is that turning point Is it now? Is now the invenstment time the government needs to step in? or is it already a lost cause? Has GM been sleeping for too long, that they have already failed in the public's eye?

Government would need to wait until enough of the important politicians have stock and then they can bail them out.

WOO HOO new thread, let me repost what I said int eh other thread to get this one started. I read in BW a few months ago that GM nedded to close 2 plants right now to cut costs, and they needed consessions from UAW on retirement and healthcare. Well got some of that done, did any plants close in teh past three months? The article said the GM has alot of assets and if they closed the two plants and kept everone else busy that they would be fine if their market share stayed above 25%. Well oct is looking like 20%. Sure, it could be a hiccup but what if it isnt. What if they cant keep 25% and are too stupid to close plants and layoff ALOT of people. How much should us taxpayers pay up for these fools?

I think a drastic slimming down of the model lineup is in order, and sell off all the extra crap you dont need. sell saab, the rest of subie, and everything but chevy, pontiac, saturn, hummer, caddy. Sell it all. Get back to what puts food on the table, selling cars. Get rid of 3-8 models per platform. two, three max. Look at the new minivans, three crappy vans could have been two average vans.
