Unprofitable Cars to get Axed "Soon"

The company, Henderson said, counted on revenue for too long from trucks and sport utility vehicles. Now, every vehicle has to turn a profit. That means unprofitable cars and trucks could get the ax, and soon.

"The view is everything's got to pay rent in our product portfolio," he said.

I would take this to mean the Kappa cars and Wilmington. I am gonna say G8 (provided there is a Pontiac) and Corvette are likely safe as I beleive they are profitable.

Does the G6 makes money? He also said unprofitable trucks. What trucks does GM loose money on?

We are looking into the new cars as well. The new 2010 Camaro is no exception. If sales fail to meet the projected number the car will be looked at just as much as the rest of our lineup at GM.

Will the Volt be profitable? If not, I'm sure this will be the exception.

Does that mean that G3s will become collector cars, like COPO camaros, and hemi cudas?

It's just surreal to me to read that coming from GM's CEO in 2009 when i KNOW we were saying it, like, 8 years ago. I KNOW I read it here, and frankly as a car buyer, I agreed with it too. It's just hard to believe that apparently, GM's decision makers really were that out of touch at the time when they SHOULD have been making all these changes.

Dammit, I was just coming in here to say that they would cancel the Volt after a year because they would be losing money on it

I can't see anyone buying them so they certainly will be low production vehicles.

You never know. Last year, during the $4.00 per gallon gas spike, Geo Metros became a hot property. Maybe the same will happen to G3s in the future...

Not likely,

Pontiac G3 = 34mpg
Ford Fusion = 34mpg
Chevy Malibu = 33mpg
Honda Civic = 36mpg
Chevy Cobalt XFE = 37mpg

2010 Malibu with DI 2.4L = 34-35mpg

Why buy a small crappy car that gets the same mileage as larger cars like the Fusion. Now if the G3 got 40mpg+ that would be another story. 2011 Cruze and 2011 Focus are both expected to get over 40mpg hwy.

correct, and buying a new car isn't so cheap. used metros were 'hot' items because people were looking for the cheapest runabouts to get them around.

To me, what is absolutely jaw-droppingly, mind-bogglingly, amazing about this, is.....

..... that this is even worthy of being news!

Think about this for a second.

The new CEO of General Motors has announced that " Now, every vehicle has to turn a profit".... and "The view is everything's got to pay rent in our product portfolio"!

Ummm..... excuse me..... but....

ISN'T THAT THE WHOLE IDEA OF RUNNING A CAR COMPANY??!!!

Ya know, over the past few days, the more info and bites that come out of GM since last weekend, the more I'm amazed that GM didn't implode years ago.

The Prius didn't pay rent for Toyota for years and the Volt will be a loser for who knows how long.
Blindly cutting lines shouldn't be the answer either. If we used that logic GM would have discontinued all of their cars years ago.
Figure out why they are losing money and invest the money to fix them or get out of the market if you can't compete.
