The good side of it (from GM's perspective, anyway):

A loaded $23K Solara V6 (230 hp!) should eat the lunch of Chevy's aging Monte Carlo. The Celica filled the same niche as the Honda Prelude and last Mercury Cougar. It was doomed to extinction from day one.
I for one am pretty suprised that the Celica is being phased out already. I expected maybe a generation change about now, but not the discontinuing of the car line.
The current Celicas are good performers, some out there running mid 14s with boltons (intake, exhaust) and they handle really well.
In my opinion Toyota had a competitive coupe. I'd like to see what they bring out next.

Of course, I'm the same guy that thinks that the current MR-S sucks when compared to the old MR-2.

The current Celica was too small, and too out of step with the trend towards "rally-style" AWD turbos. Previous Celicas had been based on the bigger Carina/Avensis platform, but the current beast was only a rebodied Corolla. Realistically, the 180hp GT-S moved well enough, but it was cramped and expensive. Overall, a 2001 Celica was far less interesting than a 1991 Cellica All-Trac Turbo.
