I hate slogans... how about these?

Chevy - Is anybody there?
Cadillac - Breakdown.
Buick - It's no good.
Pontiac - Unleaded fuel for the soul.
GMC - We are more professional grade than Chevy.
Saturn - Plastics make it possible.
Hummer - MPG like nothing else.
Oldsmobile - "It's the end of the world as we know it, and we feel fine..."

Of course... why leave the others out:

Mercedes - Like any other
BMW - The ultimate yuppie machine
Honda - The young persons Buick
Toyota - Yes, we have an ego, but that's because WE'RE TOYOTA and you're not.
Mazda - Tomb Tomb Tomb
Acura - They'll never know its really an Accord

THe worst ever is Mazda "Zoom Zoom".

Commercial don't usually influence my buying of cars, but after that Zoom Zoom thing I'll never own a Mazda in my life.

THe "what would you do with a Pontiac for a day" commercials were pretty gay too. I hope they fired the guy that made those.

The new Pontiac Commercials KICK ***.

Talking

"Left behind to rank? We'll be there. Chevrolet."

They don't make ads like this anymore: http://thirdgen.org/newdesign/brochu...kingcharge.jpg

(don't just look at it, actually read it, and honestly ask yourself if ANYTHING applies to Chevy 2003)

Does anyone know if there was ever an official reason given by GM for killing the F-body?

Yea, that's right, the 6, Protege, Miata, and RX8 are all boring and flacid I haven't driven the RX8 yet, but the other three are pretty nice vehicles for their respective classes.

No, but IMHO it was a way to keep the tangent (caused by the 4th gen) from straying too far from the original purpose of the f-body, so they decided to take a break and let the negative connotations be forgotten. To start over again, tabula rasa. I honestly cannot picture a 5th gen based on a 4th gen and cues from other generations. The 4th gen strayed too far off the intended formula. Now the hiatus is a convenient way of saying "we're taking a break and will be back soon", but my money says that the Firebird is gone for good, which is the tragedy in this situation, and the other reason for the hiatus. To quietly kill the lesser known twin that was moving fewer units. That is the silent injustice hardly anyone is talking about. Not only is it tragic that the Firebird is extinct, but the bigger tragedy is that people will not miss it. "Camaro? Firebird? Oh yeah, same thing, what's the difference?" That kind of misguided oblivion, coupled with GM's unwillingness to bring BOTH back and make each distinct, is the biggest insult I could think of to those of us who love 'Birds exclusively. So, to be honest with you, even if the F-body comes back, if it's only a Camaro then it'll never succeed like the 2nd and 3rd gen succeeded. I hate to beat a dead horse but.. variety, variety, variety.

I wouldn't say the 4th Gen strayed far at all from the 3rd Gen formula, would you?

Furthermore, what was the intended F-body formula? If you say low slung, Corvette-esque performance at an affordable price then you've basically described all V8 F-bodies from 1970-2002.

I always thought the formula was a powerful engine, aggressive styling, and faster than the mustang all for a price 90% of the country can afford.

If they all chipped in together, 90% of the country could buy a loaded SS.

I don't see how the F4, especially the LS-1s, made any "negative connotations." You could make that arguement for late F2s and some F3s, though. Maybe your criticism should be more focused on what the Firebird became.

The great shame of the F4 is that the WS6 became the Pontiac flagship, while the SLP Firehawk became all but invisible. It still amazes me that a T/A GTA was the best looking F3 , perhaps better looking than the C4 Corvette. The '98-'02 Ram Air WS6 let down the proud old name with the "bisected nostril" hood scoop and a massive price. It's too bad that more dealers didn't discover the WU6 RPO code for the Firehawk.

In general, I was appalled by the Firebird's 1998 facelift. For instance, why was it necessary to make the flip-up headlamps so obvious? That kinda goes against the point of concealed headlamps. When I say the first LS-1 Firehawks with flush mounted lights my heart gladdened - but then I never saw a single one on the street.

I don't expect you to believe me since you're obviously a F3 loyalist, but the Firebird-T/A started the third generation as the most desirable F-body, and ended the fourth as the least. At some point they left a "European feel" (Recaro seats, BBS-style rims) behind for an aura of complete and inexplicable wierdness. Maybe the rot started with the 1991 facelift.

At least the Z28 closed out the F4 as the best and cheapest of the breed. It was as if Chevy had reinvented the old Mustang LX 5.0 - a tasteful musclecar for the least amount of money. If that was a break with F-body heritage, I'm glad they made it.
