Like the Impala and Monte Carlo, there's 2 SS levels:
Regular and Supercharged.

Not for '05, the 3800 SS gets renamed LT, leaving only the supercharged SS (I thought this was going to be a V8 for '05?)

Yep, regular and supercharged
The wheels are not necessarily the production wheels.

It was my understanding there was 2 SS models with 2 seperate engines. 1 offers a 2.4L Ecotec about 170 HP, and the second has a 2.0L Supercharged Eco running more than the Redline's 210 HP.

Could anyone tell me why chevy would go with 2 different SS's with 2 different engines? .

Why didn't they call the 170hp version "z24" or something different along those lines?

Because, much as I hate to say it, sometimes marketing people are fools. Way back when the current Impala and Monte came out, I was appalled that they called the Monte an SS with the same engine that the Impala LS got. I mean, didn't we all know that sooner or later the Impala/Monte would get the supercharged 3800? So, now they are stuck with the idiotic practice of having a Monte Carlo SS and a Monte Carlo Supercharged SS. Ghey.

I can't believe they are doing it deliberately on the Cobalt. Does this affect my opinion of the car? No; I think the 2.4 VVT and the supercharged 2.0 will be cool engines in a well-done car. I just don't like the idea of slapping "Supercharged" in front of the name. Call it S/C or SSC something. Or call the 2.4 "SE" or something, and stick with SS on the supercharged car. You get the idea...

Personally, I think it's a great idea to have a multi-level approach to Cobalt SS.

If Chevy's new SS strategy is going to be successful....SS cars and trucks will have to be widely available to numerous demographics. Cobalt especially; needs to make a BIG splash in the entry level performance segment. SS and SS Supercharged will...I believe...be an effective tool to accomplish that goal.

And really, the 170 hp Cobalt SS is no slouch. It looks good, it'll handle well, has a nice agressive wheel/tire combo, has good power....and maybe most importantly will be financially attainable to those who Chevy is hoping will end up rekindling the SS REVOLUTION.

Depends on what SS is supposed to mean. I mean, when I read your post, I thought that makes sense. I mean, there were SS350 and SS396 Camaros in the past, I believe. But that is because the SS package was more feature/appearance stuff back then (someone correct me if I'm wrong). But now we have a romanticized image of what SS should be (kind of like the GTO; modern perception is WAY different from reality of that time). If they want to do it like they did back then, I guess I can see the logic of the N/A and supercharged engine (similar to the 350 and 396 choice from back in the day). I guess I am just sort of bothered by the whole "Supercharged" badge showing up right next to the "SS" on the Monte Carlo.

If they did it more like SS350 or SS396 --> 2.4 HO & 2.0 S/C discreetly on the fenders or something, I could be down with that. I guess we have gotten accustomed to not having 3 or 4 engine and transmission options like they had in the '60s, so we automatically think SS is going to be the top of the heap.

And FWIW, assuming the 2.4 HO is available with a manual (recent Motor Trend and Chevy's website both list an auto as standard with the 2.4, which I'm hoping is just at start of production or is a typo), it could possibly be my next car. I'd have to see the price after discount, insurance rates, etc. for the supercharged car...

As more powertrain choices come online...I have no problem with more than one SS package on certain car lines.

I wouldn't mind seeing more than one SS package on the 5th gen. In fact, going that route may be a key to it's success.

On guion's Mustang 40th thread we're talking about why there is so much enthusiasm by Mustang owners. The answer: a variety of interesting, desirable Mustang models.

Here's two interesting, desirable 5th gen Camaro models:

SS5.3

SS6.x
