Is Steve Saleen talking Crap?

http://www.motorauthority.com/news/c...on-09-mustang/

09 GT to have 385 HP/390 TQ.

A new mustang won't debut till 2010 or 2011 and if the current car doesn't gain any weight, that means 385 HP and a curb weight in the area of 3500 lbs.

Of course this begs the question, 4.6 4v, 5.4 3/4v, Boss motor, 5.0 TT, 3.5 TT??????????

The 3v heads on the 4.6/5.4 are capable of supporting 490 HP in stock trim, but given reliability and emmisions requirments I can't see a 4.6 3v running that kinda power, a 5.4 3v could do the job well enough though.

The 5.4L 4V Aussie Boss Motors put out over 400bhp. So 385 bhp from the 5.4L isn't beyond the realm of possibility.

He said the 09 GT would have around 350hp from Ford, and 385 hp for his NA Saleen model. That sounds perfectly reasonable to me. I hope it's true, the current Mustang's power output is too low, 350hp without gaining much weight would be great.

I'm hoping it will be the standard GT at that output and not a Boss/Mach type mustang only though...

I could see them using the 3v 5.0 in the PJ Saleen or even a 4.6 version of that. I really hope they don't because it's pretty much tapped out n/a (with only 330-340rwhp) but it's already out, reliable and emissions legal.

The GT is a fun car to drive but the rated power output is a turnoff for some, and it'll turn off a lot more once the Challenger and Camaro arrive with around 400 hp in their mainstream V8 variants. (Challenger R/T will be at least 370 in 2009, fyi.)

Given that, I'd be surprised if they DIDN'T up the GT to at least 350-375 for 2009.

Of course Mustang is going to get more power.

A Twin Force 5.0L Mod motor is under developement. DI, DOHC, twin turbo, 450+ hp.

Guess what it will be called?

Boss 302. Yesireebob.

And since Hurricane now seems earmarked for trucks only - here's some more circa '10/'11 Mustang powertrain possibilities.

3.5 Duratec V6. 250-325 hp

TF 3.5. 350 - 425 hp. Think optional on GT for the lower end, Shelby GT350 for the full boat version.

5.0 mod V8. 350 -375 hp.

Figure GDI and VVT for all. Also, consider 450 hp very conservative for the TF Boss 302 version.

How cool would a Z/28 vs BOSS 302 slugfest be?

HP doesn't effect insurance cost. The 02 Mustang GT is just as expensive if not more than an 02 Camaro Z28.

Edit: b/c I was distracted

One would hope insuring an '02 Mustang GT costs just as much as insuring another '02 Mustang GT.

Almost as cool as a Z/28 vs BOSS 302 vs Challenger T/A slugfest.

(Though one source said the super-top-dog Challenger would be called "Challenger Indy", and that the T/A would be a graphics-and-tuning variant of the R/T, which would be less cool. We'll see.)

Seriously, if Ford can deliver that twinforce BOSS with an MSRP in the low $30s, they'll have a great value proposition.

That would make for an awesome road course race series.

So where's the trash talk?

As others pointed out, it's 350hp for the GT and 385hp for the Saleen variant.
