Question Spinoff: GM holding onto Pontiac maybe for...

a better time? Just a thought on why everything else is on the table and not Pontiac?

Could it be that they know they have a nitch brand that maybe in the future could be resurected as a small brand within a brand..kinda like how it was going to survive.

Say in 10 years maybe a leaner GM now has the power to ressurect the name as a performance car for Buick GMC?

Sounds kinda funny but after seeing the names and some pics of the dealer networks that were canned.
Jeep Eagle
Dodge Plymouth Eagle
Plymouth Dodge..

Heck I still see a few Olds signs hanging in between names of other GM products that dealers sell. And how long has Olds been gone?

Its not like dealers have rushed out to pull the names off the boards..if Pontiac comes back in 10 years whos to say there will not be some dealers still with arrowhead logo's in thier windows?

not saying that the dealers are my reason for thought just saying that Pontiac is a name people know..and seeing car lots with Plymouth and Eagle on them reminds me of these cars.

The idea is could GM be saving Pontiac and hiding it under BK to bring it back in the future as the small 2-3 vehicle lineup we were looking forward to seeing before the goverment said no..I know the idea was tossed on messageboards a while ago about a single car plymouth when the Challenger came out..and all that..but this is not just a Cuda..this is a brand that if in 10 years has a performance car that fits would be really good fit with the arrowhead logo in the grill?? They were doing that with much of Holdens ideas in hand? What was Pontiacs plan if it could of played out after this current run of cars was gone?
or

There's a reason WHY there's so many dead Chrysler brand signs still up. Hell, we still advertise Plymouth on ours!!! Chrysler makes us pay SUBSTANTIALLY more for the newer full-color, updated signs. I PAY Chrysler $400 per month for my old sign. They want THREE THOUSAND A MONTH for a new CDJ sign for us!!!!

For the extra $2,600 a month in a crappy economy, they can kiss my white ***. GM, conversely, PAYS for the signs and any name changes needed to them. Where I used to work, when the Olds sign came down and it became a stand-alone Pontiac sign, GM took care of the bill and didn't charge us for the sign, anyway.

Sorry if I sounded bitter there

There's just a lot of things Chrysler does that hurts its dealers, rather than helps...whereas GM is significantly more dealer-friendly.

And on the flip side, what is sad is that some GM dealers hurt GM with huge markups, bad experiences, and terrible service.

Pontiac seems to be a bit of an enigma right now...

Some people say GM will keep it, some reports say that the name will be liquidated.

I think GM did want to keep Pontiac, they just didn't have the $$$ to make it happen.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. I mean, if it is liquidated, that could either 1) spell new life for the division or 2) who's to say "New GM" couldn't buy the Pontiac name out of the "Old GM" sell?

I believe GM is going to bring it back eventually as a small niche, like they had mentioned a few months ago. Maybe via Holden?

I don't think it will come back if they shut it down. It simply costs them too much to shut a brand down and bring it back. Imagine all the bad press.."GM took government loans to shrink..then brought brands back and became bloated".

Look at how much Toyota spent on Scion..and that is a niche brand.

Scion? That's a poor comparison. Awareness for Scion had to start from absolute zero since it was a brand new name. There's no history such as racing heritage to leverage. And worst of all there's nothing actually unique about it. Boxy styling? Lots of cars already have been there, done that, thanks (no thanks).

Bringing Pontiac back would/will cost GM next to nothing. There's already a huge pool of fans aware of the name and its deep history.

the thing is if they just brought it back as two cars or even just one. Not ramping it up as a seperate line again..maybe just a spinoff almost like the SVT line or the Shelby cars??

Kinda like this.."the new 2020 400HP Pontiac Grand Prix Only at your local Buick GMC dealers!"

Pontiac has halfway been a niche brand for years now with the Solstice, G8, and GTO along with a few rebadged cars to keep their volume up. They have been slowly killing yet they have always got the first updates over Chevrolet with the W cars always had the better engine first with the 3.8 s/c and I believe the Grand Prix got the V-8 first as well.

Wouldn't make much sense to advertise a "niche" car brand they killed when they have their work cut out for them to rebuild Buick's reputation. I think they finally realized they need to focus on their core brands that most of the public see's to start making some money again!

Leave it to die. Its just the thinning of the herd.
Between the other three car brands, they can cover it. GM had a chance to turn the brand into something different, something new.
It could have been Opels American brother
It coudl have been Alfa's American Channel
It could have had a lot of things, but it didnt.
