many 7 to 8 year old GM's are sheding "huge pieces" of paint...including:
My '90 IROC(jams, hatch, cowl), my '88 Suburban(center two-tone), my '95 ($35K-sticker) Park Ave(everywhere!)...it seems to be certain colors too.....WHITE and DARK BLUE are the ones I see the most.
Doesn't help the image on the street...
Reliability excellent!!...cost of repair LOW...mileage good, power GREAT...
But the darn paint is an expensive fix...($3k+)
Like I said, maybe it's already fixed, now???..
I'm not sure what all years, but way back in the day my dad got is 1990 CK1500 repainted by the dealer because apparently there was a problem with the primer for white that year. That was only a year or two after he bought it. I don't know if they had the same problem with other vehicles though.

I learned a few things from reading that.

I know he was talking all vehicles, but I think that would be another interesting tidbit.
Answering my own question.

Based on the data I found at Thirdgen.org, the base 1982 Z28 MSRP was $9700. Nicely optioned versions were ~$12,694 ("nicely" in this case also included A/C, which was still an option back then). Adding the CF injected version with automatic made the price ~$13,635.

Anybody have base and moderately-optioned MSRPs for a 2002 Z28? From memory, no option cars were ~$22k and more common examples were ~$25k.

The math then becomes pretty easy to do.

Re: Some thoughts from Red Planet....

That was one hell of a post! It was great to finally see some one put all these facts together. Figures it would be Scott! Great job dude! Some other guys nailed it in there posts too, ced8, centric. That's all I could remember off hand. Geez.... I wonder how those fine journalists got the facts So wrong! GM will have to pay to spread those facts around, cuz they certainly won't print that for free! However I agree with those that said don't hold back, make the comparisons show ppl why GM is better! It will take a serious marketing attemp to turn things around! Defending GM is a long lonely road, its great to get some help from an insider! Sometimes its like hey my team is doing terible right now,but teamX is doing great I think i'll switch sides now! Not Me! I'll never switch sides. Ever! GM rules baby! Always has always will! Its only a matter of time before everyone else figures it out! One things for sure,a Badass Camaro would be a really great start! Also the new GM ad is pretty good too, but we need more ads to connect the dots for the ppl!

I think GM has their paint problems fixed. I had an old 91 Ruby Red Regal that had the clear coat come off the tops of the bumpers by 1999. The newest GM car I've seen with peeling paint was 1990ish white Park Ave and an early, ragged out, most likely never waxed black 4th gen Camaro.

your kidding right?

down here in florida i see 4th gens with paint comming off in giant sheets as they drive down the road nearly every day! mostly early ones, such as 93 - 95, but i've even seen one 2000 at the track with paint flaking off.

even my own old 1995 black z28 had paint flaking off it like crazy, it was waxed and taken care of but still the paint gave up the ghost.

Re: Some thoughts from Red Planet....

That's got to be an FL thing...maybe with the severe heat? I agree with the comments about white, grey and blue back years ago...my '89 RS was dark grey and was repainted under warranty. But newer cars? Hell no. Rust, yes...but never paint flaking off in any substantial quantity...

BTW Scott, I will be printing off your post regarding the amount of domestic content in various car lines, and giving it to my boss tomorrow...a woman who justifies her recent '05 Accord purchase over a G6 because "its all the same anyways...its made here too." I bitched at her then, and here's the proof now.

If I get fired for trumpeting your message, can you take me under your wing somewhere at GM? Sure, they're trying to thin white-collar staff out, but I'm sure they won't notice one more person on the payroll

Re: Some thoughts from Red Planet....

OK, Scott. You posted that info and us 2-5% of the car buying public (hard core car enthusiasts) know or will spread the word to the rest. But what about the other 95-98% of the car buyers who get all their information from TV and print ads?

Unless it appears in advertising, it doesn't exist.

People thought Z28 Camaros and Trans Ams got worse mileage than 4.6 Mustang GTs.

I would hope that GM would learn that as long as they don't want to compare themselves with the competition IN PRINT, the public is going to go with whatever info fills the vacuum.

I live part time in Florida... I've never seen any delamination with 4th gen f-bodies...

I suppose anything is possible, but I have yet to see one, much less "everyday" examples...

Re: Some thoughts from Red Planet....

I have really never seen any major paint issues with any 4th gen F-Bodies. I live up here in Pa too, and we have to deal with enough salt on the roads for more of the year than I would appreciate.

I saw a 4th gen firebird in Holland, MI a few days ago with large sheets gone from the hood, and right down the road from me there is a 1997 or so Monte Carlo with large sheets of paint gone. It's not as common as the early 90's cars, but it still happened.

Great post Red! I agree with the others that GM really needs to get these facts out to the consumers via marketing but its refreshing to read it in print every once in awhile.

I agree. The early 4th gens may have issues, esp if their owners dont take care of them, but most f-bods I see dont have noticable paint defects.

Now the paint will flake off ANY car down here if not taken care of properly. I've seen cars only a few years old look like they were built in the 80's because of sun damage to their paint. Most of the time its because the owners "never found time to wax it or get it detailed".

Re: Some thoughts from Red Planet....

Thanks RedPlanet for your detailed facts posted on ChirpThird! It's inspirational seeing these facts and finding someone unafraid to stand up for GM.

It continually amazes me, though, how threads like this bring cynics out of the woodwork...

Ba - loney. GM paint is worlds better than the old days. Practically any mid-90's or newer GM vehicle has durable, hi-quality paint. (BTW I also agree with the other member herein who pointed out that just about any contemporary vehicle's paint will take a dive if not regularly waxed or polished). I bought my 1995 Formula used (WELL used I might add) in 2004. Here's a picture of my 'oh my God falling apart' original paint ( ) :

Just a FYI...many older cars do not have factory paint. F-bodies tend to get wrecked a lot and fixed at Maaco or some other cheap place.

Scott, thank you for keeping us up to date. It really looks like GM is making some good decisions reguarding the brands and despite what some some folks think, overall I think theres alot of interesting a cool products out there now. Anyway, still proudly GM.
