When is the boss said to return? as a 2004 model or with the introduction of the 05 since Ford will continue production of the limited run Mach 1 for 2004?

My impressions are that the Mach 1 will continue through '04, and the Boss will appear with the new Mustang.

Also it appears that the days of the 2 valve 4.6 are numbered.

It's about time that SOHC 4.6L gets some help, 260HP is V6 territory now a days. Hopefully they can get this engine to 300HP, that is where the Mustang GT should be now a days

That seems to be the plan. One scenario has the base motor in the GT as the 3 valve 4.6, with around 300hp and the 4 valve 4.6 with 300+++ hp optional in the GT.

The Boss and Cobra get the 5.4.

From how it is looking the BOSS "will" come out in the first year of production of the S197 Mustang. There wont be a Cobra for 05.(as it stands now anyway)
The Mustang might not get the 3V right away,Its to far to tell yet
Mainly with it overlapping the Romeo plant coming to full production of their 3V machinery.Windsor will be the only plant building the 3V for a while.Which until Romeo gets up and going the f150 will be the only vehicle with the 3V anything.

Go here and click onto the "Falcon range"and in the bottom center you can hear what the new 5.4 sounds like. It sounds sweet.

Wow, Ford finally gets a clue that a 3.66" bore needs more than 2 valves if you want to make any real power. Eventually, maybe they'll decide that overhead cams are a poor match with a long-stroke engine

Maybe thats why they are keeping the stroke short?Hmmmm?
And overhead cam engines are a higher hp engine anyway.BUT they are learning more and more case in point the new MACH1.

4.17" (for the 5.4 L) is a short stroke?

OHC makes no more power than pushrods, assuming the same bore and valve area, until you start running into valve control problems at high revs. Considering that the LS6 does just fine past 6500 HP, it's pretty safe to say that any V-type engine with a lower redline doesn't need OHC except to win brownie points in the showroom.
