And so it starts...

I though they earned money from Opel so selling profitable car brands probably isn't a good idea. Although right now they might want to take the money to keep the lights on.

I am not sure how they came up with 1.3 Billion.

350 million in cash...

950 million in credit...

WTF???

That is 350 million and we will loan you 950 million. WTF.

I think the pressure to seperate Opel from GM is only beginning. Wait until the German government gets involved.

Anyway, GM can burn through Solarworld's $350 million in cash in about a week.

I'd also like to see SAAB sold off. GM has done little to revive this brand over the years. In fact, I don't believe it's ever made money for GM... yet they still want to keep it?

From what I can gather, GM has mismanaged the SAAB brand and neglected and starved Opel of too much product development potential. I still can't understand the need establish Chevrolet in Europe in preference to dedicating more product development money to Opel?

If there is anything GM has done really well at over the years, it's been it's inability to make it's international brands a fledging success (DAT is the only notable exception). Even Holden's development work hasn't been well leveraged.

Nobody is really sniffing around for Saab.

What we're seeing here at work regarding Opel, are the forces of German nationalism. The oppoortunity to act on the sentiment that Opel is in fact a "German" company, regardless of the fact that it's been part of GM for almost a century.

For the first time in history, GM is weak enough where the vultures feel they have a free pass to try to scavenge.

When all is said and done, GM could end up losing Opel....

Probably because a few hours after the story broke GM said Opel isn't for sale.

General Motors Corporation Says European Opel Brand Not For Sale-DJ
Wednesday, 19 Nov 2008 09:07am EST
Dow Jones reported that General Motors Corporation, responding to surprise announcement from a German solar energy company that it's looking to buy the Company's European Opel brand, said the unit is not for sale. SolarWorld AG, a maker of solar energy equipment, said it intends offer around $1.3 billion in cash and credit lines to take over Opel and develop the first green European car company.

It would be interesting to see what our world (economy-/industry-wise) would look like if there had been forces of American Nationalism at work for the past 30 or 40 years...
