So how about that 5th gen Camaro

With all the Buickman discussion around here, you'd almost forget that this is probably one of the most exciting times ever for those of us who come here to find out about the Camaro's future.

Just three months ago, all seemed lost. Now, we have tons of from trusted insiders and whispers that we may see some real sheetmetal at NAIAS with a Camaro badge.

What I wanted to do here was see if we could sort out what we know and think we know so far. It seems as if the platform will be Sigma-lite. Will it be a platform mate of GTO? Edmunds says yes. Others, including Guy, say that's not true since GTO's chances for production still hail from the land of Oz.

Other questions: How cheap? Are they just going to aim directly at Mustang's price point? Would they aim lower, and go for the impressively low price as they did with Solstice? It seems unlikey that they would go higher than Mustang, as that would leave little if any breathing room between it and GTO.

Brute or GT? Will we be looking at a Camaro built to be lude, crude and fast, or something a bit more refined? Sigma base means this will be pretty solid, but that still leaves a lot of room for other components to determine the cars character. Specifically, how will they make Sigma "lite"?

How sure a thing? I know people can't share details, but what is the general feeling. Are things still changing every week to the degree that we will be hearing about different models being on track one day and dead the next? Or, are things as they are now (GTO and Camaro a go) basically set in stone (granted that set in stone still leaves room for it to axed)?

And finally, the most important of all - WHEN?

i have a funny feeling any insider right now will awnser all those questions with a . i think all the info that can be out is and it's just a matter of getting all the pieces together. think of the 5th gen as a giant word search book. we all need to start sharing what words we found and see if they match.

@ SS comment. Actually...regardless of how anyone may feel about the whole z28/ss argumnet...I have this feeling that chevy might keep SS on top in a 5th gen...just a hunch...not necessarily my preference (it seems to be the way they are going with all models and i'd imagine they would want consistency).

It seems clear GTO is going to continue to be Oz built and i don't imagine a vehicle which moves as many units as camaro is/should be intended to move could be built along side GTO and shipped. So i'd say it'll be coming from north america. I don't suppose that necessarily means it won't share the same platform I suppose a factory in the US could be tooled up for it...but then why not just build the GTO here too? So that means either they are being built on different platforms, or the next GTO will be built in Oz due to labor concerns.

Doubt any insider will answer anything just yet.

We did 1st hear about the Charger last November, a couple of months before it was shown at the auto show.

Seriously doubt next summer.

I'm refering to the fact that NAIAS concepts start popping up on the internet around November since by that time car mags have sent their stuff off to print.

(Car mags get pics of concepts a couple of months before unveiling so their stories on these cars corespond to the car's unveiling. Almost always, high intrest pictures leak out before the mag is on the news stands.)

Don't forget the 4 door Charger concept that was originally shown way back in 2000 or so.
