So GM is still number 1 right?

I thought they were behind Toyota in sales. The WSJ has these charts: http://online.wsj.com/mdc/public/pag...autosales.html
Am I reading it correctly?

GM is behind Toyota in global sales, the first time they've given up the lead in something like 70 years. That's what's been making the news. In the US GM is clearly in the lead and isn't likely to lose that position in the foreseeable future, although it's been looking a lot less certain in recent months.
GM beat Toyota by about 3,000 units last year to retain the title as the world's biggest automaker. Through the first half of this year, Toyota leads by 278,000 units globally.

Japan's market is so small it isn't worth trying to bust into, not with GM having such a foothold in China at the moment. Money is better spent increasing revenue in this developing market of 1.3 Billion people than trying to bust open the mature market of Japan and its much smaller population.
I wouldn't say it's small ... at ~4.5 million units, it's the third largest market in the world (behind the US and China). But I agree that it's effectively closed to foreign automakers, if not by outright law, then certainly by culture and other non-tariff barriers.
There was a segment on one of the morning news programs yesterday (CBS Sunday Morning?) about China, globalization, etc. At one point, the woman doing the piece talked about the Big Three not seeing what was coming from Japan when they made their inroads (as related to how Chinese manufacturers are starting to import their own brand names here and even open plants...)
Anyway, she stated flat out that it is now Toyota, not GM, who is the number one selling car company in the U.S.
I wanted to kick my TV. I'm so sick of journalists messing this stuff up.
They do have a small but real lead in global sales, yes. But they are not number one in the U.S.
