So GM is Bringing the Origional Firebird concepts to the PA Auto Show, Why?
Re: So GM is Bringing the Origional Firebird concepts to the PA Auto Show, Why?
The reason why it irks me and many other Firebird fans is because we have been told in no uncertain terms that the Bird isn't coming back, not for a long while. While you could say the same thing about the Camaro, at least there are hints about the Camaro reemerging.

They were Turbine Concepts as well dont forget. In a market where people are complaining for higher fuel economy or alternate fuel vehicles, it's something neat from a day gone by as well as something totally different. Anyone ever see Jay Leno's "jet-bike"?? Awesome motorcycle.
I think GM has 5 warehouses of concepts and cars that public/media arent allowed in? And even if you get in, they dont take the covers off the cars? Those concepts were made, and then put under cover, long before my father could even drive. I have never seen them in person, but you can bet I'd love to hit a show with them there. Lets just get a little piece of history and let the public see it once again.
And someone really does need to edit his sig!

What I disagree with is the failure of GM to give the slightest scrap of truth to F-Body fans as to whether or not another "Camaro" will ever appear.
We've suffered thru years of teasing! The Ramones ad on the back cover of Newsweek (with a BEAUTIFUL 1st Gen) a few years back, claiming "We'll be there!" The slip-up (and retraction) of a member of the GM brass regarding a resumption of Camaro production. The .PDF, etc.
In the face of such teasing and DENIAL, the displaying or mentioning of any F-Body or Camaro/Firebird-related items while denying that it will come back is aggravating and irritating!

BTW, you did take your medicine today right?
Re: So GM is Bringing the Origional Firebird concepts to the PA Auto Show, Why?
At the Dallas Auto Show, Chysler always brings us some awesome old concept cars. Last year we got the PT (Pronto) Spyder concept car, it was one of the coolest cars at the show. This year, I emailed Daimler Chrysler and requested the '99 Charger R/T concept, but never received a response.
You should be happy to get to see those old concepts. I wish I was in your shoes. Maybe you should just stop whining and be happy you get to see those old rocketesque cars?
I don't understand how the f--- these are teasing you or why you wouldn't want to see them.

Look, we are talking about CARS here. Cars that we love or at least like a whole lot. We aren't talking about God or the neighborhood drug dealer, and we aren't talking about an ice water vendor in summertime Yuma. If anyone is going off the deep end because GM isn't posting that Camaro or Firebird is coming back, or is loosing sleep worrying about the whole thing.... let's just say, it's not healthy.
If you have money burning a hole in your pocket, and your ding-a-ling is going to fall off if you don't run out and buy a V8 RWD car right now, then go lease a Mustang or a GTO for a couple of years! It will jack up their sales figures, show there's a market for that type of car, and by the time you come off of lease you just might have your Camaro coming out in showrooms.
But then again, if you have good medical coverage, there's always a good shrink.

Settle down guys! I didn't say I was planning on going postal, or anything.
I've owned 4 camaros and a total of 6 cars with bow-ties on them. These cars ARE a big part of our lives, some of us, at least. Therefore, I stand behind my rant.

Agree. The marketplay grows tiresome. The old concepts are there to test the market ie. how many people stand around gawking etc. It stands to reason that with the miserable failure of the GTO in the marketplace GM will be looking at greener pastures with another Firebird. But even the Camaro is nothing but boardroom speculation and a few drawings right now.
Get serious GM.

Re: So GM is Bringing the Origional Firebird concepts to the PA Auto Show, Why?
I don't know what is wrong with you guys. I really like seeing these older concepts. If GM brought the Pontiac Banshee and California Camaro concepts from 1989 to the Dallas Auto Show I'd be jumping up and down with excitement. I've never seen them and don't have any plans on going to Bowling Green Kentucky or whatever they are keeping them. I wouldn't be dissing them for bringing them there because they might or might not have much to offer.
Re: So GM is Bringing the Origional Firebird concepts to the PA Auto Show, Why?
I agree. Seeing these old concepts is very cool indeed. Some here need to stop thinking a conspiracy is always around the corner.

Brangeta has another thread with some 4th gen development pictures that I think is really great.
Scott, if you are reading this, I think you have a built in customer list if you ever want to write a book on the development of the 4th gen Camaro.... let alone one of the next Camaro replacement should it happen.
Re: So GM is Bringing the Origional Firebird concepts to the PA Auto Show, Why?
I'd love a book that shows the development pictures of the Camaro and Firebird. I searched for about 2 hours on google yesterday looking for more information on that "Tomcat" prototype that looks like the 4th gen Camaro. I couldn't find a single thing. I wish I knew where I found that pic...
Just by the styling of the car I get the feeling Bertone may have had some influence on it, but this is just a guess. Almost everything in the late 80s coming out of GM was the same general style as the Stingray III, Banshee, California Camaro, etc so it is hard to say that definitively. I would buy a book that had GM prototypes and concept cars in it for sure. Especially if it didn't have recycled pictures I can find on the internet. For example, I have every California Camaro (Iroc-Z concept) picture I could find. Yet there is a press kit with a very nice black and white photo of the car that I have never seen. (Only seen a tiny one of it in the folder on some website selling the press kit). I'm a member of GM's media site and they don't have a single picture of the California Camaro, it is kind of weird.

I'm a big fan of old concepts too. Question being asked here is why the Firebird? Why now? GM doesn't have a ponycar concept. Not even an artists rendition. It looks pretty stupid to have a 50s concept when Ford has the real thing for sale. The old Firebird certainly has its nostalgic points that remind one of the ridiculous old 50s sci-fi flicks. But the name connotates a car that should never have been abandoned.
