Sky Combines Dynamic Style, Performace with Equally-Attractive Price

FOR RELEASE: 2006-01-03

media.gm.com

MSRP of 2007 Saturn Sky to start at $23,690

DETROIT – With its combination of dynamic design and agile performance, the 2007 Saturn Sky signals a bold new direction for the Saturn brand. The vehicle’s price, however, shows the brand’s ongoing commitment to providing solid value to its buyers combined with an industry-standard purchase and ownership experience.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) for the well-equipped 2007 Sky starts at $23,690 for models with a 5-speed manual transmission, and $24,540 with an optional 5-speed automatic. (Both MSRPs include a $575 destination charge.)

The Sky, available this spring, is the first vehicle to feature a new look that will inspire the design of future Saturn products. The roadster will be followed this summer by the all-new Aura midsize sedan and Outlook midsize crossover utility late in 2006. These vehicles feature the same, dynamic exterior design theme, with inviting, sophisticated interiors.

“The Sky signals a whole new direction for Saturn as we dramatically grow our portfolio,” says Jill Lajdziak, Saturn’s general manager. “It blends the dynamic new design of our vehicles with a strong value proposition in its segment.”

Dynamic Design
The Sky’s exterior features a strong front end that represents the new face of Saturn, with a pronounced fender peak and a bold, chrome bar that carries an integrated Saturn badge. It has a wide, muscular stance with short overhangs and 18-inch wheels pushed to the corners for a true sports car feel. The convertible top folds completely into the rear compartment, and the clamshell hood provides excellent accessibility and reinforces the Sky’s sports car character. Halogen projector beam headlamps and foglamps extend the exterior’s sophisticated look.

The design philosophy is carried through to the Sky’s interior, which is driver-focused with integrated controls and displays. Creative use of piano black and chrome finishes combine with available leather seats and technical grains to emphasize richness and precision. Jewel-like detailing on the HVAC and lighting controls is executed with tight fits, highlighting the attention to detail.

Roadster performance
The Sky also has the athletic performance to back up its bold styling. It is equipped with a standard 2.4-liter, 177-horsepower Ecotec engine with variable valve timing and a five-speed Aisin manual transmission with a short throw shifter. An available limited slip differential decreases potential wheel slippage, increasing the Sky’s performance potential ever further.

Other major standard features on the 2007 Sky include:

* Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and dynamic rear proportioning
* Four-wheel independent short/long arm suspension with coil-over Bilstein monotube shocks
* Air conditioning
* Power windows, locks, mirrors and remote keyless entry
* Dual-stage drive and passenger airbags with Passenger Sensing System
* AM/FM/CD Stereo with auxiliary input jack for use with portable audio players
* The 2007 Saturn Sky will be built at GM’s Wilmington, Del., assembly facility.

I don't think Sky should have happened.

I definitely like the Sky's looks better than the Solstice's but the Lightning looks better than both of them...Either way, I'm anxious to see the Sky Redline

Is it a hardtop convertible? How much do you think the redline version will end up being? Nav available or no?

That 'major features' list is kinda short and skimpy considering the price they're asking for that car IMO - I mean sure it LOOKS like it cost way more than that, but I guess the real determining factor is how it drives.

Didn't they take the trans out of the Colorado pickup trucks? Is it really that great of a trans to compete with the 'snick-snick' short throw trans in the Miata, Z4, S2000, etc?

Yeah, the Solstice and Sky both have the 5-speed from the Colorado.

The reviews say it's not that bad, but it isn't as good as any that you name.

Car and Driver (huge GM fans, for certain...ha ha ha) refers to the shifter in the Solstice as a "willing companion" and seemed to rate it just a tick or two behind the Miata (and S2000, which is still their benchmark). I remember being pleasantly surprised at how nicely the manual shifts in the Colorado. The Solstice has much shorter throws and feels nice and crisp to me.

I don't recall offhand any references to the Z4. BMW is often praised for their shifters in general, but occasionally I'll see one vehicle or another of theirs being panned for rubbery or slightly vague feel.

The Aisin in the Solstice may not feel quite as crisp as the ($10k more expensive) S2000, but it certainly is nice enough that if you like the car, the shifter wouldn't keep you from buying it.

Right, but the S2000 also comes standard w/ 240hp which is closer to the redline edition that I'm sure stickers quite a bit closer to the 30k mark than the 177hp base model, and the S2000 also comes with some decent standard equipment that I'm not sure about the Solstice/Sky coming with.

I'm still not trying to say the Solstice/Sky is better/worse or whatever - I'm just saying it's not just like paying 10 grand more for just a shifter. You're also getting more power, lighter weight (I think), more features, etc.

I like the way the Sky looks better than any of the other cars in that class and the redline w/ 260hp sounds like a winner to me, though. Under 30k fully loaded I think that'd be a serious winner in my book, especially if they can manage to add a nice nav system for the '08 model which is when I'll be looking.

You can probably safely bet the Sky Redline will not touch $30K . The way I remember it being explained is the the base sky=a loaded solstice . I would assume that theme would carry on to the redline/GXP . $28K should be a pretty safe bet for a loaded up 07 Sky Redline .

The Sky has real nice exterior styling. Note to GM though-The green
Sky pilot car that is being shown at Midwest Saturn dealerships has a body that is just full of scratches, it badly needs a buffing. Even a relative of mine who is not into cars as much as I am noticed it. Nice car, but not the way it should be presented. By the way, the dealership was just filled with people taking in the car, too bad it wont be available in reasonable numbers.
