Sigma....
Re: Sigma....
a better question is why is it that everything costs "too much" at GM in general??? If the other manufacturers can find ways to build well styled, reasonably priced cars what is so terribly wrong at GM that they can't do the same damn thing? GM is supposed to be the KING at bringing new architectures to market just due to economies of scale (which they are rapidly losing). If GM, the largest auto maker in the world, can only do as well economically as a boutique brand at engineering and bringing new artifacts to market, then I ask again, what is so tragically wrong at GM???
Re: Sigma....
I think that work has begun on a GMNA version of Sigma-, I think to many people associate Sigma lite with Zeta and apparently from this article they aren't the same, as much as a year ago when the decision of cancelling Zeta was apparently made. I would also suspect that whomever said VE=rehased V-series range was right. It would appear that a dumbed down Sigma is being worked on, possibly by Holden, possibly by GMNA, or even both, as we speak. It could be that the Chevy version of this is Rumble. Maybe the Buick Velite was even on Sigma-lite(dumbed Sigma not Zeta afterall). I sure would like to be a fly on the wall of a few engineering meetings.
Re: Sigma....
Taylor said another option is re-engineering Holden's VT architecture,
which is the basis for the Holden Monaro and Commodore and Pontiac GTO.
Wasnt there some debate as to if Zeta was this?

Re: Sigma....
Sigma-lite was the 1st name used way back in time, and why didn't the Holden guys used it? Or did they consider it but deemed too expensive from their POV and so they created the VE-Lite? Z284ever had suggested in the past about,"what if VE-lite is a carryover of the current V-chasis???".
Re: Sigma....
Well we know that the AWD system developed on the current V series is supposed to bolt right into the VE so I guess we were blinded by the spotlight of getting a bunch of RWD vehicles that we didn't pay attention to the details. It seems as though VE is a re done V-series and isn't going to be world class afterall, although I know nothing for sure.
Re: Sigma....
This is kind of an off note. But does it **** anyone else off that at the beginning of the decade GM did a study on putting Camaro on Sigma but Caddy didn’t want to share? Now we are pretty much in the same situation and trying the sigma option again……I know sigma and sigma lite are different but its still the same basic architecture. WE could have a 5th gen this year if the first Sigma go around worked out.

Sigma-lite was bounced around back when CTS 1st came out. There was someone on this site who not too long ago actually came out and said he worked on a Sigma-based Camaro before it was cancelled. Either that was part of Sigma-lite, or Sigma-lite grew out of the cost problems discovered from that effort.
Although by the descriptions I heard, Zeta was essentially Sigma in modular form, it now seems that there was enough different about Zeta to give it it's own designation. the rear suspension alone is completely different from Sigma.
One final note on the solid axle vs IRS debate raging on at least 3 other threads here, there is one thing I want to point out:

There was some work done on a low cost Sigma, but that was abandoned half a decade ago.
What may end up being the new "Sigma-lite" may more accurately be called Zigmappa.
