Should Chevy re-examine it's Xtreme strategy?

I was listening to the radio today....and they were interviewing someone representing a consulting firm. They were talking about branding different products.

Interestingly, they were talking about the "Extreme"label. The label was ...he said.... popular with a certain segment of the youth market in the '90s.

It was used to sell everything from food products to clothing.

He also said that the term....as far as marketing potential is concerned, is now completely dead. Those who intend to sell products to young people should avoid labeling anything "Extreme".

I would definitely agree with that. It just seemed to me when GM started the whole Xtreme thing that they were trying to hard to appeal to a younger market.

they should re-examine their use of Xtreme and of SS

no matter how much they try, gimmicks dont sell as well as good products, over the long run

SS should = more power
Xtreme should = appearance (bigger rims, body kit, interior)

Hitorically (even recent history) hasn't SS covered both. Back in the 60's, if I remember my history correct, the SS packages always included appearance features with the big motor.

On the trucks, the Extreme models came right after the S-10 SS in '97-'98. That SS just had different wheels and a black paint job, where as the Extreme series had the wild ground fx and wheels, AND included the 2-door Blazer. With the new motors and motor accesories coming out rom GM, I think they can very successfully market a Colorado SS, Equinox SS, and Trailblazer SS.

Each vehilce will be slightly different in their powertrains and (aesthetic) packaging, but all should be the top STREET performers in their respective line ups AND competative classes.

IMO, American consumerism has gotten too focus on the brand and not the product itself, which hits nome particularly hard with me.

I always liked the Xtreme S10 because it was a truck that people were putting body kits, rims etc on and GM - somehow - managed to figure out that if they make a factory one it'd be pretty cool. Im looking forward to a Colorado xtreme. But sticking on malibu, trailblazer, aveo, etc wont work.
