[Updated] Reported: Newest Motortrend Has 05GT @ 5.1s 0-60 and 13.6[ @99mph

..........for the AUTO that is.

Apparently a guy on BON has seen the new MT and they say they believe the manual will clock in at 4.8-4.9sec.

Good to see that the Mustang is finally starting to surpass LT1 times a bit. That 0-60 seems awfully quick for having such a not so fast trap speed...takes another 9 seconds to go just 39 MPH more? Either thats really crappy top end (traditionally ) or its aerodynamics are as bad as everyone has been thinking they are, and even worse.

Either way...looks like I'm gunna stay away from new Mustangs at the stop light and wait to walk by them on the highway

Re: Reported: Newest Motortrend Has 05GT @ 5.1s 0-60 and 13.8 @99mph

LS1 fbody was clocking 5.2 seconds for 0-60 and trapping 104-106 mph in the quarter mile. LT1, which trapped 99 - 100 had 5.7 as 0-60.

Either this Mustang is well geared for city driving only, it is a brick, or those numbers are not accurate - or a combination of two.

But, if it got 13.8 in the 1/4, that's great stuff! The manual will hit 13.5, I'm confident.

Welcome to 10 years ago..................I had to say it.

What is the auto tranny that is used in the GT? It isn't the same one that was in the previous generation was it?

I was at US131 dragway in martin , mi about a month ago a few ford reps had a auto 05 GT they were racing along with a 04 cobra . The 05 was running 14.1-14.4@98-100 mph . The MT times probably corrolate as the air was muggy and pretty gross @131 .

It gets the 5-speed from the T-bird and LS.

Have to say I'm dissapointed, that isn't much faster than an LT1, and still not as fast as an LS1. Hopefully they'll be off like most magazine drivers are, and that trap will be a couple MPH faster.

FWIW - back in 99 , motor trend got a red 99 Z to go 13.8 . The same car in GMHTP with Evan behind the wheel went 12.89 . I dont know the rear gear or trans ratio's , but at 300 hp , the new stangs should not be 14 sec. cars .

Yeah thats what I'm hoping for. For "the best mustang ever built" to be a 13.8 @ 99 car, that's sucks.

so that 14.2 wasnt that far off? I guess it wast a V6 liek everyone pointed out. 14.2 at 96 sounds like guy who couldnt drive if MT got 13.8.

If this ran like low 13's, then I can be impressed, but right now its running LT1 and slow LS1 times.
How when the GTO ran 13.8, it was considerd slow, but when the Mustang GT runs 13.8, we are getting excited?

It's geared for 1/4th that's it.

The trap speed is pathetic.

Re: Reported: Newest Motortrend Has 05GT @ 5.1s 0-60 and 13.8 @99mph

Okay, someone typed out the complete article. I was incorrect, the 2005 GT AUTO (BTW) didn't run a 13.8 sec 1/4 mile..........

....... it ran a 13.6 sec 1/4 mile @99mph

Apparently, the improved rear end/suspension has MUCH better traction than the previous gen.

Motortrend is guessing 4.8-4.9 for the 5-speed. And, if they ran a 13.6 with the AUTO, we could be in for 13.3 or so with the 5-speed. And remember, this is Motortrend....they are NEVER the fastest.

P.S. Al, this IS the AUTO.

P.P.S. How do you edit the title of the first post that appears in the forum?

Because one is fast for a $25k MSRP, and the other one is slow for a $34k MSRP, especially when compared to it's $24k MSRP "predecessor."

Here's part of the article:

Exclusive First Track Test

We've got the numbers...and they're good

Don't ask us how, but we had our way with a 2005 Mustang GT five-speed automtaic just long enough to gather real test numbers and send this pony back to the barn wet. To say we're please with the results would be like saying it'd be cool to have Jay Leno's garage keys for a day.

Here's the deal from our man behind the wheel: From a stop, the 2005 GT launches with unexpected ferocity at under two seconds to 30 mph. Normaly, this king of urgent getaway is reserved for cars with clutch pedals and DIY gear boxes. Using a brake-torquing technique at over 2000rpm, the new Pirelli tires favor a liberal amount of wheelspin, easily modulated with the throttle. The P Zero Neros hook up more readily than the Goodyear Eagles on previous Mustangs, which tend to alternately spin in vain or bog-'n'-go depending on launch rpm. The new engine revs quickly pas the indicated 6000 rpm readline and shifts just shy of the "real" 6200 limit. First, second, and third gearsl are tightly spaced and snap off upshifts nearly as rapidly as a Mercedes AMG SpeedShift automtaic. Forth and fifth gears, however, are performance-stinking black holes slowing hte otherwise energetic acceleration curve.

The 2005 GT is quicker than all but the current supercharged SVT Cobra, and, even so, only by a 0.2 to 0.3 second margin. With a 5.1 second run to 60 mph, the new Mustang outruns a compareable 1999-2004 GT four-speed automatic by nearly a full second. A same-gen five-speed manual GT managed only a 5.4 0-60 , and an automatic Mach 1 mustered a 5.6 second best. Similar story in the quter mile: THe new car's 13.6 second time is about half to a full second better. It's 99.9 mph trap speed is just shjy where most current-gen Mustangs run. We suspect the new car's deep, high-fuel-milage fourth and fifth gears are to blame.

What would a manual trans GT be good for? Estimates on automatic-to-stick-shift conversion factors vary, but this auto's close 1-2-3 gearing keeps the engien boiling, so the difference may not be as much as you think. It's safe tos ay a self-shifting GT is a sub five second runner, likely in the 4.8-4.9 second range.

In the salom, the new Mustang feels altogether more precise, predictable, and stable than the car it replaces. The firmer platform is better suited to allowing hte suspensions and tires to do thier jobs more effectively. Where the old car slides as a whole past each cone (unpredictably at that), the 2005 bites hard on intial turn-in, transfers weight in the blink of an eye, and manages rear roll-steer better. Just a hint of opposite-direction wheel input brings the rear end back in line with an authoritative snap ready for the next cone. The best run was over 66 mph, better than any previous Mustang except the race-ready Cobra R of 2000. In typical Mustang fashion, the new car lapses into terminal understeer in the slower-speed skidpad test, but still managed a Cobra like 0.84g orbit.

In case you're wondering how the new Mustang stacks up agaisnt the GTO: The American pony is faster and nimbler than the Australian-bred goat-automatic or manual-but a retest will be in order as soon as we can get our hands on the upcoming 400-horse Pontiac-Chris Walton

How the hell are they saying that the M*stang is faster than the GTO when it runs those times? Also, they are not even comparing an 05' with an 05'.

Also, I bet the 5sp manual won't be that much quicker than the auto. It seems that this tranny is much better at putting down the power over that power-sapping auto in the old car. That thing was just a strait up dog.
