Its a good car, and after sitting int he GT500 at the Auto show, it has more Fbody in it then I think Ford would like to admit too. No doubt that the 05 Mustang GT is a great car, but it doesnt raise the bar IMO. It only updated it.
Last i checked 450-500 horses and tq not only raised the bar, but it pretty much put it out of just about everyones reach. That's the Mustang you'll see come 2006. Even in 2003, Ford raised the bar a good bit with the very potent 03 Cobra.

Ford has also pretty much confirmed production plans for a Bullitt, Mach-1, and BOSS in the coming years. Expect kick-*** performance for less $$$$ than the GT500. They intend to offer lots of different variations of the Mustang, each with their own seperate personality, looks, engine, and performance levels. Something the camaro hasn't done in a very long time.

I don't know what your definition of excitement is, or why you see the Mustang as lacking any sort of excitement and considering that a "fact" , but none is generating more excitement the way the Mustang is now and the near future imo.

And don't just concentrate on the Mustang GT. That is just a base performance version, and a pretty fine one at that. The Mustang GT is only the start. It may be the only option now, but there will be plenty in the mustang lineup come 06+.

Yeah, some 40k superstang is nice. But what about performance anyone can buy?
We can talk about modding and high-end models and all that fun, but something the average man can buy. Like everyone likes to compare the Z28 to the GTO for bang for the buck, the Z28 already did the low 13 sec, .9x skid pad deal back in the 90's.
If Ford stepped it up from there and at 25k offerd a IRS and maybe 350hp in the GT's engine to push it near low 13's stock(average driver), then I could give it praise. I have yet to hear of a consistant low 13 sec Mustang GT. I hear 14's over and over.
Sorry, I just dont get excited over that. I shouldnt have to spend 40k to get into the 12's. And if I am, I want a world class sports car, not some drag racer with a live axle.

Like i said earlier, GT is only the begining with more affordable alternatives to the GT500 like the Bullitt, Mach-1, and Boss coming out in the coming years. The z28 was basically the fastest camaro you can get (just as fast as SS), but the GT wasn't/isn't meant to be the fastest mustang you can get. Just the way Ford does things. The GT's positioning, performance wise has a lot to do with how Ford sets up their Mustang hiarchy which is a lot different than how GM setup things with the 4th gen. Infact, the 4th gens resemble the fox-body mustangs in a lot of ways. In the fox cars, you could have gotten the top of the line 302 motor in the cheapo mid-level LX or the top of the line GT while the Camaro had a different tune/engine for the RS, z28, and IrocZ with the hot engine reserved for the top of the line Iroc. Of course, they flip flopped come 93+.

And sorry, you aren't going to get 350 hp 3 valve VVT 4.6 v8, an IRS that's hop-free, real good chassis/suspension, quality interior, and decent standard equipment list for anywhere near 25k. Keep in mind, that's ONLY $1.5k more than an econo-tuner Cobalt SS equipped with the sports package. No way, no how. Realisticlly, you'd be looking at a $32+ car easily, something the GT isn't.
