Porsche's Off-Message Models Axed in VW Takeover

Get a good look at the Porsche Cayenne SUV. In the wake of the bizarre German corporate soap opera whose end will soon see the absorption of Porsche AG into the mighty Volkswagen Group, the controversial Cayenne - and even more astoundingly, the just-released Panamera 4-door sport sedan - has no future after VW takes over.

Such is the report from Britain's Car magazine, which says a "massive U-turn in Porsche's product plan" resulting from the bitter VW boardroom triumph means Porsche will be forced to discontinue the Cayenne and Panamera after their product cycles are complete around seven years from now.

"VW Group has plenty of SUVs and saloons (sedans) - it doesn't need Porsche to build them," says the story, which should be music to the ears of Porsche faithful and critics who insist the tiny sports-car maker did potentially irreparable harm to its brand by pasting the Porsche badge onto heavyweight off-roaders and sedans.

Didn't Porsche almost bankrupt itself trying to buy up shares of VW? Now it's the other way around? VW is taking over Porsche?

I did see a Panamera this weekend, turning out of the Porsche office in Atlanta. It looks pretty sweet in person. When I first saw it in the magazines, I was like . But they did a good job on the styling.

Isn't the Cayenne basically a rebadged Touareg anyway?

While I think the Panamera is an abomination, the Cayenne seems to have a strong business case for itself. Though it's not to my tase, I'd keep it in the lineup.

I can't remember which came first--Chicken or the egg kind of thing--but they are very, very similar in terms of overall architecture.

I'm actually very excited to hear about this. Porsche is a sports car company. Leave the family hauling and luxo-barges to everyone else.

I agree as well.

I believe the original thinking was that a very large percentage of Porsche owners also had an SUV in the garage. So it made sense to get their "double down" business by offering a Porsche SUV. In the end it did more harm than good.

I think that they were actually co-developed, though it's a Volkswagen platform at heart.

To the purity of the brand, yes. To the bottom line, no. The Cayenne is the best-selling Porsche of all time and is hugely profitable. It was really the model that made Porsche the most profitable car company in the world.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it should have ever existed, but it's been a wild success financially.

VW will not get rid of the Panamera. By the time its product cycle nears its end, both Lamborghini and Aston Martin will both have sedans of their own

I like Panamera. No worst than the Quatroporte. Considering how Ferdinand Porche had his hands in things like the Beetle..I don't see how a Panamera could be considered "unworthy".

I agree. The Panamera is intended for Porsche enthusiasts who want a four passenger sport sedan with a performance pedigree. Sure you can buy a better looking Jaguar XF or a quicker Cadillac CTS-v for much less, but that's not the point. Its a Porsche afterall. Ferrari has built 4-passenger cars in the past, so what's the big deal?

I concur 100%. Porsche should be about sports cars. Period. Nothing with four doors should ever have a Porsche badge on it IMO.

Unlike the Panamera, the Beetle at least has the correct number of doors and engine configuration

Porsche has built lots of 4-passenger cars, but this is their first production 4-Door car.

So, they decided that anything that doesn't look 'identical' to a 911 is bad for business?

...just checking. Because, I dunno, I thought making money was the primary objective for car companies, not satisifying self serving yuppies. The Cayenne does everything it was expected to...primarily, it sells.

I don't want a 911, mainly because I don't wear my underwear that tight, but I do see a Cayenne in my future.
