I looked today at MOtorTrend who did a review of Chevy SS. It is reported to have 6.0 L 430 HP engine, however it weighs a whopping 4900 pounds!
Where is all this weight coming from? 94-96 Impala weighed 4000 or 4200 (can't recall), but another 700-900 pounds? What do you think? And, moreover, WHY?
Estimated time for the 1/4 mile was 14.0

If memory serves me right,The SS is built on the TrailBlazer platform. So that is part of your answer.I think the rest is a load of crap that GM is giving away with the car making everyone "THINK" this thing will sell like "hotcakes"

After seeing that magazine I would buy it if Chevrolet got rid of two doors and called it a Camaro!
Cheap looking curves, reeking of multiple CAD reworkings, and a Snoopy-face. They said they wanted a performance family sedan? Ditch the mutt SS and reminisce on the axed Impala SS which filled that role perfectly.

Yeah,
I got that issue too. My guess is the extra weight is comming from the C4 IRS and (overly)extended wheelbase (121"). Imagine what times it would get if they put the car on a diet. Mid-12's at 3600 lb, hmmmm. It's interesting that they had to beef-up sigma to get it to handle the LS6 torque. I wonder what they are doing to the CTSv to handle it?

Good catch Guion
I wouldn't have thought to look back at the press release. From press release, Weight (lbs / kg): 3660 / 1660 (estimated)
I think MT has a typo as they listed the car's Curb Weight (lb) as 4914 and its Max towing cap (lb) as 3660
.
The 5.1 sec 0-60 mph and 14.0 sec 1/4 mi numbers seem way too low for 430HP/430TQ. Maybe they estimated it based on the incorrect curb weight. I'm sure they'll print a correction in the April issue, but the damage is already done.
