Pony Car Wars!!!!!!

It looks like the pony car segment is about to EXPLODE! No kidding.

It's not going to be just Camaro vs Mustang anymore.

Toyota Supra may not be as dead as we think....maybe 2008?
Challenger is most likely on the way by '07.
Cougar....it's more than just talk.
G35/Skyline.
GTO is the defacto replacement for Trans Am.
And, of course Camaro and Mustang.

This is shaping up to be one busy segment in the next few years.

It's about time!

Re: Pony Car Wars!!!!!!

I wouldnt classify a Supra, G35/Skyline, Cougar and GTO as pony cars.
With Toyota killing any kind of cars that might actualy attract someone under the age of 40, I doubt the Supra comes back as a Toyota, if it comes back at all. And if it does, it wont cost 35k. Id expect Corvette to Viper price for the Supra. Same for the Skyline.
Cougar will probably go back to its pony car roots, cause Ford wouldnt dare change the sheetmetal or anything to make a unique car for Merc. Just how funny will it look with a waterfall grill on a 05 Mustang?

2008 Supra: Sporty 2+2, V8, RWD. Sounds like a pony car to me.

IF Supra returns....I believe that Toyota isn't about to repeat the mistakes they made last time. The last Supra and Supra turbo, were wonderful cars that Toyota priced out of the market. They even dropped the MSRP by $10,000 ( down to around 40K for the turbo), the last year that you could buy a Supra here....but it was too late to save it.
Supra won't be cheap..figure 30ish for a V6 and mid to high 30's for the V8....but certainly not Vette/Viper territory. Don't forget...Toyota wants to take over.

Re: Pony Car Wars!!!!!!

A V8 powerd Supra!! AHAHAH! Yeah, that will go well with...well, just about no one.
The appeal of the Supra is gone with the turbo I-6, so the ricer boys dont want it, us Muscle car guys wont want to touch it becaue we will already have a Camaro, Mustang, and Challenger to deal with, so who exactly is Toyota going for? Its not like sedans where you can make a boring design and expext it to sell.
Very stupid move on Toyota's part if you ask me. I doubt Toyota even comes up with such a car now that boring dull and unattractive cars is what they are so good at.

Are you kidding? Try a % of the Pony car market and a large % of the $35-$60K sports car market will be creaming over this machine.

All we have to do is bring back AMC so they can build the Javelin. Then we'll be all set!

Re: Pony Car Wars!!!!!!

I can only see a V8 supra selling in one of two ways.

A. Aiming towards the same market that the GTO is in for, or the G35 perhaps. (meaning the mid-age groups)

B. Being so freaking good looking that every american male will want it over a camaro or mustang.

I don't see B happening, so A is the one reason I can see Toyota selling a supra.

What they're good at is taking over segments.
Plus, I've never met a Supra owner which I considered a "ricer". I agree with you about the V8 though......the turbo I6 has achieved cult status with enthusiasts.

I am sure that V6 FWD Impala is doing lousy ever since it abandoned its RWD V8 roots.

Re: Pony Car Wars!!!!!!

Good news to me, plenty of cars to pick from but I'm sure I can tell you right now which one will be sitting in my driveway

I'm also skeptical of the Supra returning with a v8. The big appeal of the old Supra as with the Skyline as well was the turbo and twin turbo machines. I'm sure they could do well with a v8 but its gonna be alot harder to do esp. with the Big 3 more than willing to send hp levels into the stratosphere and not to mention the huge reputation the Big 3 have for building quality powerful v8's.

But I will say one thing though. The day Supra sales start taking huge chunks out of Mustang sales WILL BE the day Toyota officially takes over the automotive industry.

That is the day that Ford no longer makes the Mustang.

Re: Pony Car Wars!!!!!!

if the supra even came back, would that v8 be ohv or dohc?
dohc v8s aren't exactly cheap to make
also, i think the i-6 was really the supra's engine and the one they should keep in there (don't they make over 600hp modded on the stock bottom end or something insane?)
also, how is toyota ever going to make a good looking car? their styling has got to be some of the worse i've seen *jmho*

Re: Pony Car Wars!!!!!!

Some people on supraforums have made over 900hp on the stock bottom end.
If they do bring it back I would figure they would have 2 engines a V6 and a V8. I would guess the V8 would be based off their lexus engines which are DOHC. I doubt it will be an I6 because toyota seems to sadly be phasing out those engines.

They were good at taking over segments. Now its just mindless sheep that buy Camrys now. Toyota has them in a trance.

And I dont mean Supra ownwers are ricers, but the kids who slap on a set of pep boys performance parts droooool over this car. A V8 would be a smack in the face of the import world. It seems to be that it would be like making the Camaro a FWD, V6, auto only 2dr coupe.

Not that I want to turn this into a Toyota thread....but just listen to what you are saying Al.

Toyota is only effective because of some magical spell that puts their customers in a trance.

Supras are not impressive to you, becaue the tuner crowd drools over them.

Oh, if only GM had such power.

Where's ProudPony? I'd like a Cougar update!
