Pontiac Super Duty "image" motor....
The Firebird mega-thread got me thinking. What if Pontiac were to get it's own "image" engine.
The engine that would make people think of "PONTIAC".
What would you base it on? Would it be a V8, like Northstar (or the Aurora V8 in the Bonneville GXP) , or the GEN III/IV smallblock?
Would it be a tried a true version of the SC 3800?
How about a turbo version of the HF V6?
Or even a turbo Ecotec?
Speak freely...but be realistic.

But that's only if you can certify it for CAFE and EPA, package in a number of current Pontiacs and establish an assembly plant for free.

Yeah, there may be some trademark infringements on the name "Super Duty".....but what the heck, this is just for fun.
What about the Bonneville GXP's 4.4L V8. It's a less expensive version of the Northstar...but certainly more expensive that the genIII smallblock. Packaging may be a problem.....since, like the Northstar....it's larger than a big block Chevy.
But it would certainly differentiate Pontiac products from, say, Chevy. A supercharger could even boost power further.

I have no problem with Pontiac using a different V-8 than Chevy.
I'm just afraid that the same levels of power can't be achieved with the Northstar as compared to the GM corporate V-8.
Maybe with forced induction.
But then there's the size issue.
I'm not sure it would be possible.

I think they should stick to the Gen III/IV motors, but I wouldnt be opposed to Pontiac using differnt displacements.
At least for the most part anyway, I wouldnt be oppsed to them makinf one model say the Formula or something be a Forced Induction V-6. As long as it were respectable.

While "Super Duty" might be copyrighted, I'm sure "SD" might not be, so there's a possiblity. What I would like to see is a DOHC 24/32v based out out of the IV next gen 6.0. Wishful thinking, but that's why the GMPD is there for, limited edition vechiles.

'rember the SD4? Big horsepower 2.5L-based engine. Few lucky folks dropped 'em into cars like Fieros. I'm a proponent for a VVT 200+ HP N/A 4-cyl engine, and have it in a couple different cars (Solstice, and an RSX-fighter FWD with an available SMG gearbox ...). Not to say that they can't have a great big V8 too, this is just my idea.

Perhaps a unique displacement of the L(x) engine for Pontiac may be the best way to go about this, since the Northstar simply isn't as powerful.
Say perhaps this 6.3 liter Z06 engine Motor Trend mentioned with LS1-type heads. Could be used as an option in the GTO and Pontiac's RWD sedan, since it seems Chevy is going with 5.3 & 6.0s for it's coupe & sedans.
Pontiac could label it "SD 390", and beyond certification, assuming the Z06 rumor is correct, shouldn't cost GM anything

How about an S/C 3800 SD. I know the 3800 has been around for a long time....but it seems to have nine lives.
If Powertrain would open up the purse strings....they could design much more free flowing heads and an aluminum block. 320...340...or more horsepower could be readily available from this rugged motor, and you could use it in both FWD and RWD applications.

I think giving Pontiac its own displacment Gen IV V8 would probably be the best choice based of cost and the fact that those engines kick @ss. How about:
Gev IV
5.5L
24V with DoD
400HP
