JD Power themselves does mid and long term surveys as well... it just takes several years for that data to ever get filled in on newer cars.

I have a subscription to Popular Science and Popular Mechanics and one of the two of those (can't remember which one) sends me out a free copy of JD Power's full report. Most of it is available online as well I think.

Tell ya what. Just for ha has, does it rate, say, a '96 Grand Am? Compare it to a '96 Camry and a '96 Accord. I'm reasonably positive the GA did not score as well, but I'm willing to bet it did ok. Plus, things have gotten better in 10 years

Looks like GM does well in long term dependability too (as does some Toyota's)

2004 Vehicle Dependability Study Summary

The Vehicle Dependability Study measures problem symptoms of 3-year-old vehicles, primarily in categories representing malfunctions; noise, vibration and harshness; driveability; dependability; and safety. The VDS is one of three J.D. Power and Associates quality metrics, along with the Initial Quality Study (IQS), which measures quality after 90 days of ownership, and the Automotive, Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, which measures customer perceptions on the design, content, layout and performance of their new vehicles.

Either way...GM builds good cars...the issue is, some of it's designs do not create the impression of quality. The current Tahoe's dash is fine from a quality standpoint...it won't squeek, rattle, or break. However someone is likely to sit in it and immediatly think it is a pile of crap because the design is so ugly and generic. GM's problem is not build quality...it is precived quality.
