Land Rovers are very good off-road vehicles, at least they used to be. I hope this Explorer based LR will not fall back in its capabilities, but most likely it will - Explorer is just a road vehicle.

The did a good job differentiating the exterior. I don't see any Explorer resemblance at all.
With regards to the off-road capabilites, I think the Explorer's rear suspension design (where the half-shaft goes through a hole in the frame) will be a limiting factor. Good offroad capabilities require huge suspension travel coupled with relatively soft springs, and I suspect the half-shaft design will compromise that. Or, maybe they raised the frame and floor to allow the half-shaft to go underneath as god intended.

I doubt many of todays Suv's even see gravel. Especially these luxury Suv's which only serve as "bling bling" vehicles.

Besides, in UK there are plenty of country roads where 4WD and high sitting position come in handy - it's not like US/Canada, overlayed with paved roads in and out.

Yes, but the Land Rover Discovery is known among the British to be one of the best vehicles for off-roading, and whether they are used to their limits or not is of little concern for the vehicle's overall reputation.

This specific Land Rover will probably only be available in the North American market i think since I don't think the Explorer is sold anywhere else. It's probably modeled specifically for our life-style.
I guess it comes down to reputation or $$$. People questioned the truck based H2, but they seem to be making tons of money for GM Hummer. The purist for the most part hated it. There's rumors of an H3 which'll probably be based off the TB/Colorado platform. There's reputation coming second to $$$$, and this seems to be the current trend. Land Rover is probably after the $$$.
