Phear the Chevrolet!!!!
Phear the Chevrolet!!!!
Sam Hornish used the new Gen IV Chevy(Cosworth) engine at Michigan this week, and placed second!!
(changed message at last minute...bad way to lose, but at least he was dominant for most of the race)

I should've been more specific: I'm talking about the Gen IV engine for the Indy Racing League which was used for the first time today. The engine was developed by GM Racing in conjunction with Cosworth, because the Gen III's had been getting owned in Indy racing so far this year.
Is this actually the Gen IV Chevrolet car and truck V8? I recall hearing that Cosworth would take a hand in developing something for GM, so I wonder if the Indy and the production car engine are related...
As far as I know, those engines are far from related. IRL engines are displaced at 3.5L and rev past 10000 RPM ( I don't know exact specs). CART engines are 2.65L turbo V8, and they too are very rev happy.
Our Gen IV engines are 5.x + L in displacement and redline at 6250 RPM - they are not designed to be revved high.

I watched the whole race too (that and the American LM). I think he lead for 120 some laps, and would have taken the win if he hadn't been edged out at the last couple of hunded yards.
That new engine is something. I've heard the old engine was down 50 some Hp. Good to see them competitive once again.

I'm pretty sure these engines are not anywhere related to street engines..
Its pretty cool the engine worked out.. I hope GM learned something from all this...
From what I understand, Ford bought out Cosworth... Cosworth designed an IRL engine because at the time, it looked like CART(which Ford runs in) was going to switch over to IRL engine rules, but it didn't.. So Cosworth had an engine design that wasn't used.. GM needed an engine to replace their relatively slow Gen III IRL engine (supposidly down by about 40 hp), so they struck up a deal with Cosworth to use their engine, and badge it as a Chevy Gen IV engine.
Too bad GM couldn't figure it out themselves, but at least they got the team back up to be competatitve..
