Performance based S10 xtreme?
Performance based S10 xtreme?
Just thinkin about this in class today. Since the truck is already going twards a niche (sp?) market why didnt they ever make a higher performer, like a supercharged 4.3? I see a ton of the trucks around and most of them have aftermarket body/wheels/engine/exhaust... so it seems like a lot of the owners dont mind paying a little more for something better.

I think that they should offer a small V8, like the 5.3L, in the truck. Something with alittle more than enough power to make it competative, but not too much where it's hard to get it to hook up. I think a V8 option would make it an even cooler ride. My buddy has one w/ the 4.3L and it does ok, but could stand some more power.
A 5.3 in that truck would be very nice, although the 4.8 would be much more reasonable. I would think that the 5.3 in the S-10 would overpower the tires quite easily. My frien had a 4.3 S-10 and we could chirp 4th gear in it with only a few bolt-ons.
What has your friend done with his truck? I think that I would agree with the 4.8L in the S-10. By the way, anyone know what they are gonna do with the Xtreme when the colorado comes out? Isn't it replacing the S-10?
He had JBA shorties, SLP cold air, new MAF, SLP exhaust, and a throttle body spacer. He ran a best of 15.8 at the track with those mods, although he is not that great of a driver so those could have been a little better. He also had a 50 shot on it and ran a 14.8. Then he put the 75 in and totaled it on the way to the track, so the S-10 is no more.
About the S10, I think I read that they will keep it for a few years as a "value" option for a small truck, just like they are doing with the Blazer and Trailblazer.

My friend just started doing stuff to his. He had a Flowmaster muffler single in dual out and a K&N right now. I'm going to modify the MAF sensor for him and I think that he is going to add a Power Programer. Also JBA headers and don't know what after that. I'm trying to talk him into a supercharger, but I dout that will happen. If is were up to me, I'd drop an LS1 into it and then work on getting it to hook up. Someday maybe!
Doesn't anyone remember the S-15 based GMC Cyclone or the Jimmy based Typhoon? GM has "been there and done that." The turbocharged 4.3 V6 was a sort of later day Buick GNX, good for 0-60 in under 5 seconds.
Factory hotrod trucks were a good idea back in 1991, and will be far more popular today.

S10 is getting the axe
I work with a guy who's dad works for GM. The good word (or bad) is the S10 is getting discontinued due to low sales. It's replacement will be a midsized truck based on the Trailblazer.
Also...The Silverado SS will be seeing a lightened version in a year or so. Less towing capacity..MORE Lightning killing capacity.

ZR28, GM itself came out some time ago to sat the S10 was going to be replaced by Colorado. A little late, but welcome nonetheless.
To be hones.. GM leaves people out in the cold when they can easily extend their options and provied a better following...
There is a crate motor, designation ZZ4 i think can't remember but i'm sure someone know what i am talking about.. it is a V-6 and Caranddriver once swapped that in a regular S-10, added headers, muffler and an intake... that all netted over 300hp.. which is not bad at all.... that was what i was thinking when i was trying to buy one.. the extreme with a slightly lower stance and the stick shift would have been AWESOME to say the least... the stiffer springs and bigger wheels from the factory would have given it the ideal sleep look, though i would have added a descreened MAF, Hpp3 and some tuning as well as a 50 shot of NOS to get that baby running... but oh well GM misses the plate again...

I always have liked the looks of it. -Mike
I believe I remember the ZZ4.3 from the SEMA show. They showed off this engine.

They also showed off an S10 that has a 6 inch shorter bed for a more agressive looking stance. Both trucks are in this link. But a 260 hp 4.3 would be a better start in the first place for that truck. It's so underpowered in the first place, this engine could have helped it fight the Tacoma and Ranger better instead of letting it become replaced.

i've seen a good number of 350 swaps into S-10's.. Makes the little bugger move... Lingenfelter has a AWD S-10 with a twin turbo 7.0L LS1.. the thing does 10's easy... only thing holidng it back is the tranny..
