Papa John's Camaro reward situation turns salty, ex-owners looking for bigger slice

File this under "No Cool, Wacky Deed Shall Go Unlitigated." John Schnatter, Papa John of Papa John's Pizza, put out a $250,000 A.P.B. to find his long lost 1971 1/2 Camaro Z28. According to the folks at Papa John, the person who won the money was the one whose name was on the title of the car – that is, the owner of the car was paid the dosh for selling the car back to Schnatter. Kentuckian Jeff Robinson came forth with the car and took home the cash.

The Papa John's folks say the rules never said anything about finder's fees. But when the Sloanes of Indiana helped point Schnatter to Robinson, Schnatter offered them $25,000 for the assist. How did the Sloanes know about the car? They had owned it previously and sold it to Robinson.

Now the Sloanes aren't happy about "only" getting $25,000. Billie Sloane wants more of that quarter million, and will sue Papa John if he doesn't pony up the cake. Her evidence is "advertisements and a press release that promised the money to whomever could 'reveal the car's whereabouts.'" Jeff Robinson chimes in, though, and says Sloane came to him and said the original owner would buy the car from him for $125,000, and says that she didn't mention the contest nor the full amount of the reward.

No matter. Now it's between Sloane, Papa, and potentially the courts. If only Papa John had listened to the late M.J. about another famous Billie: "So take my strong advice, just remember to always think twice..." Um, yeah, never saw this one coming. Good luck, Papa John...

Can't say I'm surprised at all.

25K dollar finders fee is crazy anyway. 250K is crazy for that car. It's not like Papa didn't pay up. I hope the courts make these people pay back the 25K they got.

I think the whole thing is just nuts. $250k for a 2nd Gen Camaro. I understand sentimental value and all, but really, he could make any 2nd gen look and feel just like his old one for a whole lot less.

Second, may the greedy bitch who is trying to bilk Papa John for more money rot in hell. $25k for doing something any decent person would do for someone genuinely interested in the whereabouts of the car....is far more than enough.

the court SHOULD make them give back the money to papa johns... but it ain't going to happen and they will probably settle for an undisclosed amount. Sucks but that's how it works in the end.

This whole thing is nuts.

The guy got 25K for a Camaro he butuchered and turned into a drag racer, so he already got most likely more than double what the car was worth.

Settle for free Pizzas for life, or a Papa John sponsorship to race Camaros in the future, and call it a day. Looking for a bigger share of 2k large for a 2nd gen Camaro for no reason other than greed is just plain....

He did.

He had another Z28 Camaro that was done up to look just like the one he sold back then.

...he paid $250k for the car yes...but that money also got him a LOT of press on multiple news networks as well.

He essentially paid $250K for advertising

That's just sickening. I would've pointed him in the right direction for free... any reward is just a bonus. The only thing worse than that vulgar display of greed is the horrible jokes in the article... "bigger slice" in the title and the Billie Jean reference was a big stretch

So guys... does this not just scream out loud about what is wrong with America today?

"My gift wasn't big enough - even though I knew it up front and I really don't deserve anything at all for simply doing someone a favor."
"My coffee was hot and it burned me when I spilled it while trying to drive, drink, talk on a cell phone, and put on my make-up."
"I really didn't think it was wrong to take millions from the pension fund... they weren't using it."
"It's OK to run this 100-year-old business into the ground and liquidate the assets and put thousands of lifetime employees on the street... it wasn't making money anyhow."
"I don't want my kid listening to the President of the United States - he is a bad role model and only wants to brainwash my kid."

The last 5 years of my life have been the most embarrassing for me to admit that I am an American. I am still proud, and I still fight for the rights, but it is becoming ever-more difficult to do. We are no longer about "serving our fellow man and country"... we are about "getting all I can get for me".

The b1+ch should be sentenced to 10 days community service and the cost of the court actions for taking the court's time for such a triviality and sent home with probation. But it will never happen. Truth is, there will be about 4 or 5 attorneys that will end up making thousands off the litigation, John and this wench will both end up with less oney in their pockets, and everyone except the lawyers will be irate over it all. Nice "win-win" there, huh?
It simply infuriates me. At least maybe Papa John's will get some free advertisement out of it.

...yeah , the $25K was paid to the people that pointed him to the guy that had the car . So really he paid $275K when all was said and done .

Karma has a funny way of coming back to get you . Getting paid $25K for what amounts to a basic refferal , then trying to further capitolize on what turned into a huge media event..... now thats bad karma . While it would be bad press for Papa to attempt to renig on the $25K , hopefully the courts dismiss the case and make the Sloans use some of that $25K to pay all court costs .

I swear , people have no shame or dignity anymore ...it's pathetic .
