Maybe they said something like "does not include cars that were wrecked... only cars that were salvaged due to mechanical repairs", or something like that.
Marketing people loooooove to play with stats. And that goes for any brand of car on the road.

And how can you delineate between a car dying of natural causes, versus one that was smashed? You're going to go into EVERY insurance database to do that? I smell fish...
I will check for the "source" next time I see the stupid ad...

their cars? nope. when did you see this advert?

I rarely ever see any cars from the 80s on the road anymore regardless of manufacturer, except for some fox bodies and 3rd gens, and most of them are beaten to hell anyway.

Well as far as Toyota being number one, it happens. Every company has their good and bad times. Toyota is lighting a fire underneath GM's ***, they are going to be the underdog and work their asses off, meanwhile Toyota will probably fall into the GM thinking after they are #1 and start cutting costs and the tides will turn.
I look at this competition as a good thing for GM. They really /really/ NEEDED it...

The GM ads or slogans of this nature such as "the longast lasting, most dependable trucks on the road" will have a foot note telling you that that claim is based on a model year range (ex. 1974-2003) that are still currenly registered vs. originally sold. As far as I can remenber.

Think of how many cars are totaled every day!

Not completely accurate nor completely honest to derive such a blatant statement from, but easy enough, and close enough to not make it false advertising in a legal sense.

No match for my rockvees though.

1999 ... 250k
2000 ... 230k
2001 ... 245k
2002 ... 200k
2003 ... 255k
2004 ... 240k
and 2005 is about the same as last year so far. So they're staying pretty consistent.
As to how Toyota calculates this 80% number, I really doubt they're excluding wrecked cars. It's probably as simple as how many cars did they sell, and how many are still licenced (or perhaps just registered) with the DMV.
Re: Over 80% of Corollas made since 1986 are still on the road!!
So where do all the old cars of any brand that nobody wants go to? Exported to 3rd world countries? Heck... that'd still be "on the road"... they didn't say they were still in the US!
Re: Over 80% of Corollas made since 1986 are still on the road!!
Classic example of misleading auto advertising. In fact, I think this was in my statistics text book as a common way people lie with statistics. I don't have time to check the numbers, but it's entirely possible that 80% of the Corolla's made since 1986 were built in the past 10 years.
Re: Over 80% of Corollas made since 1986 are still on the road!!
The same claim I would almost garantee statistically could apply to the chevy cavalier . GM's marketing just chooses not . Well , and GM seems to keep changing names . The only car in their line up now they could build a straight 20 year history with is the Silvarado and the Corvette . All the others have been called different names or are new models .

Statistics are BS. I'm an analyst, you come up with numbers and the bosses change them, or ask you to look at them in a different (incorrect) way.
I see a lot more fox bodies and 3rd gens than I do corollas or camrys.
All I know is I hit 218,000 on my Camaro today, and my only failure has been my heater core. I replaced a few engine accessories due to noisy bearing over the years, but thats it.
