OnStar services available to other manufacturers
Re: OnStar services available to other manufacturers
Darth, you are correct. My issue is the with turn-by-turn stuff as well as the advertising.
I haven't needed to use any of the emergency stuff and sincerely hope that I never will.
As for directions, I will stick with my Garmin. It always works and not once has it ever accused my of lying.

Re: OnStar services available to other manufacturers
That's my situation with the emergency services as well, but I subscribe to Safe & Sound after my trial periods run out, because frankly, it's cheap insurance and it's unobtrusive ( unless they start calling me with advertisements, which will not go over well)

Good luck with your new vehicle.... if you happen to have any further in-car advertising calls, please post or let me know, I find that really amazing. Crazy that they tell you it just didnt happen too... I dont get it.

Re: OnStar services available to other manufacturers
If you get in a crash and either your bluetooth phone or your GPS called emergency services for you and lets them know exactly where you are, then you need to fill me in.
Otherwise, I wholeheartedly disagree about OnStar being obsolete.
Re: OnStar services available to other manufacturers
This weekend we were in a 2011 Duramax pulling a 44' goose neck in rural Alabama and running out of fuel. They have IPhone4's and I have Google Maps on my Driod. But we had to rely on On Star to find a fuel station that A: Was open.... B: Had diesel.... C: Was nearby..... D: Still near our route so we didn't have to go backwards.
Later on in the trip the SES light comes on and On Star was able to tell us what the code and description was.

Re: OnStar services available to other manufacturers
We've been an OnStar customer for 7 years now and have never had OnStar call us unsolicited.
Strangely my wife likes turn by turn better than a screen based nav. She states that it allows her to keep eyes on the road, the most immediate action is displayed on the DIC. Even stranger is that her vehicle has an OEM DVD nav unit as well.

Re: OnStar services available to other manufacturers
I like the turn by turn navigation, but it isn't worth the money IMO. Also, I'm a guy that like to see a map.
Doesn't Ford Sync or MyFord Touch do that?
Why couldn't you use the droid or iphone, no 3G service I'm guessing? Your situation is not the norm. iPhone or Droid would be enough for 99% of drivers.

Re: OnStar services available to other manufacturers
Bluetooth and GPS also can't unlock your doors for you, locate AND shut the vehicle down if it's stolen, or run diagnostics like mentioned above. Just pointing that out... if I had a new GM vehicle I'd probably use it until the free period was over. I have yet to use the Sync system in the Mustang. HOWEVER, this thread is about just a mirror system, so it probably can't do any of the above except for the stolen location thing???
